Demographics explain a lot, but not everything. If I am not mistaken, New Orleans has been a Democrat plantation for a long long time. Maybe even a third long.

White 33.0%
Non-Hispanic 30.5% Black or African American 60.2%
Hispanic or Latino (of any race) 5.2%
Asian 2.9%

No one died in the latest mass shooting. Zero to two deaths don’t usually get the publicity.

Any mention of the Howard Johnson shooting back in 1973?

The weapon that made him do it was a RUGER Deerslayer 4 shot tube fed .44 magnum.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Essex

Mark James Robert Essex (August 12, 1949[1] – January 7, 1973) was an American mass murderer who killed nine people, including five policemen, and wounded 13 others in New Orleans on December 31, 1972 and January 7, 1973.

No mention of it. Came in handy having a Marine aviation unit near by.

Chocolate City, per Nagin.

Hardly unexpected or surprising.
