If ours keep cranking for ten years and the cost of energy here keeps going up, it will easily have paid for itself.

We chose not to go with one of the fly by night solar companies but an established local electrical contractor. The panels are guaranteed for well beyond the ROI timeframe as are the convertors.

What about panel installations that are purchased over time?

I’ll bet the installer demands insurance as part of the deal.

(Kind of like comprehensive ins. on your car when making payments.)

I see fools all over putting up solar panels. These are people in their 70’s and 80’s. They don't get it that they'll never recover the cost. Most are lease deals, which will cause all kinds of problems when the house is sold.

They are not very attractive, but having your electric bill drop from $250+ a month to $20 is quite attractive.

I've never had an electric bill hit $200. And most of the year my bill is well under $100. It's not worth all the hassle when you go to sell the house.

Did what happen? Did our electric bill drop that much?

Yes, had it installed late spring. Thinking of adding a panel if we install zone A/C.

We peaked at 3.4 kW today at 11 AM. The $20 is a base cost the electric utility charges for processing.

Good for you, did not ask. We have no heating bills, electric is the extent of our utility bill.

“Curious as to why, although I don’t have them. We don’t get that much sun here, especially in winter.”

They have to punch so many holes through roofs that often there are leaks, lots of leaks...at least from fly-by-night outfits.

Then I’m glad I don’t have those panels.

More “green technology” that costs too much, is flawed and causes more problems than it solves.

Me too. 6 or so years ago, I was tempted here in Texas, due to this President’s war on coal and the cancellation of over a dozen power plants. I figured we’d be living under rolling blackouts. But didn’t happen, and now we have a lot of natural gas power plants.

What kept me from doing was a large tree on my neighbor’s land. Would have caused big-time shadowing. I was very lucky, in the end.

Seems you have inadvertantly stated the solution.

I agree there are too many under-the-radar outfits running around, get a van painted up, and go into business. See them all over.

We refused to even talk to those types. Good luck getting any workmanship screwups fixed. Phone is disconnected???

Go with a licensed contractor that has an established business in the area.

I think it’s because of fire hazard....and electrical shorting in case of fire...also high voltages and water are a bad combination for firefighters.

Guy down the street had a short from a squirrel chewing through the lines. We have no shortage of squirrels. I sure it won't be long before another has a hankering rubber coating.

*Out here I see these homes covered with roof panels and have always asked ,WTF do you do if there is a roof problem AKA a leak ??

Nothing goes on my roof except, rain and snow and that is more than enough.*
.
Agreed, I have 400 watts of PV panels strictly for keeping charged a 1000AH battery bank for a solar generator. Plus 3 solar water heater/radiant floor heat system panels and they are all ground mounted. I am able to clear snow blocking the panels and work on connections easily. They look a lot better ground mounted and not breaking the skyline above the roof. I don’t believe in roof mount systems myself, just a personal preference.
