New Jersey governor Chris Christie came out swinging against his rival for the GOP presidential nomination Marco Rubio Tuesday. In a Tuesday interview with radio host Laura Ingraham, Christie responded to Rubios claim that the Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program could not be rolled back 'immediately.'
The Florida senator told Univision host Jorge Ramos in April the DACA program, which exempts children who entered the country illegally from being deported, should 'end at some point' in the future. 'It cannot be the permanent policy of the United States but Iâm not calling for it to be revoked tomorrow or this week or right away,' Rubio said.
Christie shot back on Ingrahams show. 'Its hard to keep up with how many times Marco changes his positions on these things, to tell you the truth,' he said. 'Ive said very clearly that the presidents conduct here is illegal. And, it seems to me, Ive been talking about lawlessness on the campaign trail a lot and its getting a lot of reaction, you cant act in a lawless manner as the president of the United States and expect that people are going to follow you. And, not have a sense of the justice that applies to everyone in this country. If the presidents executive orders are illegal, which I believe they are, then they need to be revoked the first day you get into office.'
Christie also challenged Rubio to say whether he thought the DACA program, which was issued by Barack Obama through executive order, was illegal. 'I dont know why anyone would want to have someone who is not going to enforce the law as the chief law enforcement officer of the United States,' said the Republican governor. 'You have to enforce the law, and if you believe, as I do, now maybe Marco doesnt believe that the executive order is illegal, and if he doesnt he should say that.'
It was a hard hit from Christie, who has sat in the bottom of the polls for several months while Rubio's numbers have recently ticked up. But strong debate performances from Christie as well as the dwindling fortunes of Jeb Bush have renewed interest in the 'tell it like it is' governor. Christie has improved on his favorability numbers among Republicans, which were pretty low at the beginning of the year, and a recent Quinnipiac poll found 59 percent of Republicans viewed him favorably, his best showing in Quinnipiac's poll since 2011.
This needs to be done by all the candidates. Carson is asinine on immigration and a lot of other issues. It is time for all the candidates to start contrasting these positions.
They (the candidates in question) can merely flip and twist, get a good script writer to push the viewer’s buttons. Talk is so cheap.
Look at what a candidate DOES, not at what they SAY.
Trump and Cruz have a real track record to speak of. The rest are either dubious or liars or nothing burgers.
‘I dont know why anyone would want to have someone who is not going to enforce the law as the chief law enforcement officer of the United States,’
Speaking of Cruz, he needs to get on the stick about this issue. He is basically tied with Rubio, and needs to bury this direct competition (the young, articulate Cuban guy who loves the US because of what it did for his family). C’mon, Ted, go after him!
When Christie is to the right of you on immigration, you’re in pretty bad shape.
Time to make a career change, Rubio. Why not join the sales force at a good used car lot in your area?
“When Christie is to the right of you on immigration, youâre in pretty bad shape.”
Is that not the truth. He also does not know how to keep his credit card charges under control.
Rubio is good for one thing at this point, and that is hurting Bush.
Fast talker Rubio is a natural used car salesman.
âI dont know why anyone would want to have someone who is not going to enforce the law as the chief law enforcement officer of the United States.’
That is another reason why I can’t believe Carson’s poll numbers. He has no intention of enforcing immigration law.
How many seats in the New Jersey State house did Christie get?
Not a single one
The New Jersey republicans lost three seats yesterday
Not good
I DON'T believe his poll numbers. I don't dispute that he's popular - he's a very nice guy with many good ideas, and he talks about them in a normal, conversational way. I just don't believe that he's Presidential timber - he's never managed anything but a small staff (and, being in business, I know that this is mainly the job of an office manager), he's never been too heavily involved in negotiations, he's got zero foreign policy experience, etc.
Trump is, of course, an abrasive New Yorker (but I repeat myself). But he has LOTS of real-world experience as a manager, he's had to make budgets with his own money, and he negotiates pretty much every day in some form or other. No, he's no foreign policy maven - but he wants to WIN, and very clearly is an ultra-competitive person who will do whatever it takes to succeed. He's done a LOT of hiring of expert managers to handle details (something that, again, Carson hasn't).
So, why is Carson so high in the polls? Simple: the media and the GOPe want him there, so they fudge things a bit (easy to do with polls). He is Trump's key competition - and if he is seen to be stuck at 15%, or even falling a bit below that, Trump will so utterly dominate the field that the race will be over by Super Tuesday, if not before - and TPTB cannot stand for that, so they put pressure on the poll-takers to fudge things a bit.
