Todd to Carson: How Is Monitoring College Political Speech Not a Violation of the First Amendment?
Breitbart ^ | 10/2502015 | Pam Key

Posted on 10/26/2015 7:03:48 AM PDT by conservativejoy

Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” host Chuck Todd pressed Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson on his plan to use the Department of Education to police universities and colleges political speech and deny funding in cases of “extreme political bias.”

Carson said, “This is not just spouting off, I’ve thought about this. The way that works is you invite students at the universities to send in their complaints, and then you investigate.”

Todd asked, “How is what you’re advocating not a violation of the First Amendment?”

Carson countered, “It’s not a violation of the First Amendment. All I’m saying is tax payer funding should net be used for propaganda.”

Todd said, “Your definition of propaganda could be what somebody else views as free speech.”

Carson answered, “Well that’s why I said, we’re going to have the students send in, and we will investigate.”

Carson wants the government to monitor and control political speech in schools through the Dept. of Education.

The Dept. of Education needs to be abolished. What he is proposing is Big Brother at its sinister best.

Frankly, I wouldn’t put Carson on a school board, much less as POTUS.

Typo correction...

I knew Carson stepped in it when he went there but to be honest aren’t all educational institutions doing that right now with anything having to do with Christianity?

Good idea on Carson’s part, or bad idea.

Either way Todd is a moron who thinks not getting money from the government is a violation of free speech.

Nothing to worry about if you are an instructor or professor that is teaching....and NOT acting as a propaganda machine.

I would add....the same description for a journalist might need to be applied. If you can’t do much except act as a cheer-leader or be a mouth-piece....then you aren’t really a journalist (like Rush for example). Rush will tell you up front....he’s simply not a journalist.

Love the way "Conservatives" are leaping to the defense of tax payer paid for political indoctrination as "Free Speech"

NO, your school class room is not suppose to be a platform for you to spread your political ideology. College Professors, and the like, are actually suppose to be held to intellectual standards, not just written a blank check by the State.

Another example of how the GOP is willing co-conspirators of the Socialist state.

Does Todd ever ask universities about the PC Police?

Or does the First Amendment only apply to liberals?

Carson should have went right back at it exactly that way.

Speech is already strictly monitored and restricted on college campuses nationwide.

If this doesn’t raise any alarms for you about Carson, I don’t know what will.

One person's teaching is another person's propaganda machine. So if someone turned in a conservative professor then would they be put in front of the Department of Education inquisition as well?

Ben Carson Wants To Police Speech On College Campuses

His plan calls for monitoring for “extreme political bias.”

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said Wednesday he would use the U.S. Department of Education to police speech on college campuses.

During an interview, Glenn Beck asked Carson if he would shut down the Education Department as president.

“I actually have something I would use the Department of Education to do,” Carson responded. “It would be to monitor our institutions of higher education for extreme political bias and deny federal funding if it exists.”

Carson discussed this same idea with a Las Vegas radio host in June. Although he did not explain details, the host, Heidi Harris, said she “loves that idea.”

During a town hall meeting in Des Moines, Iowa, last month, a student asked President Barack Obama last month what he thought of Carson’s plan to monitor for political bias on campuses. Obama responded, “I have no idea what that means, and I suspect he doesn’t either.”

The Carson campaign did not respond to The Huffington Post’s request for a comment on the subject.

It’s interesting to hear Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, suggest the federal government should monitor what sort of political views are shared on campuses, considering how many times he has railed against “political correctness” that censors Americans’ viewpoints.

For example, Carson compared the U.S. to Nazi Germany last March, before saying, “I know you’re not supposed to say ‘Nazi Germany,’ but I don’t care about political correctness. You know, you had a government using its tools to intimidate the population. We now live in a society where people are afraid to say what they actually believe.”

But Carson’s plan, to deny all federal funding for political bias on campus, would be pretty intimidating. Nearly all colleges and universities rely on federal dollars through student loans and Pell Grants for students to attend their institutions. Many wealthy universities, like Harvard, Yale and Carson’s former employer Johns Hopkins, rely heavily on federal research grants.

So you would just give the Propaganda arm of the Democrat party unlimited funding to propagandize their world view with no attempt to reign them in? Just write the checks, don't worry how the Democrats are using the money?

It is people like you that give the GOP the name "The stupid party.

Here is a notion. Instead of pathetically flailing around daily for some reason to attack the other candidates, try making a case FOR your candidate for a change.

On the issue of being Constitutionally-minded, I liked Carson over Trump.

Carson is clearly not ready for prime time, and perhaps never will be, vis-a-vis as POTUS.

It’s Cruz or Trump. In that order, for the primaries.

Just try to give a pro-live speech on campus these days without permission and not in a designated “Safe Space”.

Easy there. Think about the general election and the charge of censorship. Whether or not this is a good idea is irrelevant. He will get slaughtered by this type of stuff.

Not ready for prime time.
