Putin is in Syria to keep the Assad regime in power and to restore Russian influence in the region. Russia and Iran are working together to keep their ally, Assad, in charge so their strategic national interests are served.

I doubt Russia will be going into Iraq or anywhere else to defeat ISIS.

No. Never did. My point was that the whole situation, of which ISIS is a big part, could have been prevented if it had been handled by Obama correctly. ISIS would never have come into existence along with all of its horror stories and destruction.

Yes, Putin is there to take advantage of the situation opened up by a weak and dysfunctional Obama. Exactly what they are doing. As you note, Russia could not care less about ISIS. It is about power, control, oil, presence, etc.
