A grand jury has recommended charges against three dozen members of a New York City college fraternity in connection with the death of a freshman who was killed during a "brutal" hazing ritual, police said on Monday.

Five of the young men face third-degree murder charges. Police and prosecutors are expected to announce details at a Tuesday morning press conference.

The victim, Michael Deng, went on a weekend retreat to Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains with the Baruch College chapter of Pi Delta Psi in December 2013 and never came home.

He and other pledges were were blindfolded and ordered to carry a backpack filled with sand across a snow-covered field while fraternity brothers charged and tackled them, according to police reports.

"The ritual was brutal," police said in a statement on Monday.

"Deng was subjected to repeated blunt force trauma which was applied to three different organ systems of the body to include the head, torso and thighs."

After Deng blacked out from a head injury, other frat members delayed taking him to the hospital, instead calling the fraternity's national president, Andy Meng, who allegedly advised them to hide Pi Delta Psi regalia.

The medical examiner concluded that the delay "significantly contributed" to Deng's death, police said.

I finished college but never rushed a fraternity. I must say, I never understood what satisfaction fraternity members get from this sort of behavior. It is sadistic and brutal. My step son just started college and is interested in a fraternity. This is my biggest fear with him doing so.

I remember reading about it when it happened. Horrible. And it might have been prevented if they had gone for help.

The cruel behaviors of many sororities and fraternity are a mystery to me.

RE: My step son just started college and is interested in a fraternity.

Did he tell you WHY he wants to join one and what benefits he gets out of joining it?

Will it help him find a good job or pay his tuition after he graduates?

I pledged a frat (for the chicks) and when the hazing started I severed that relationship. My parting sentiment was an attitude adjustment to a senior member that thought he could do whatever he wanted and nobody would do anything.

Hazing is for pu__ies.

To get anthropological on you the brutal behavior is a primitive survival of tribal male "sodalities; i.e. the cult of the bear, eagle, wolf etc. etc. The sodalities often required the initiate suffer some physical injury.

How do you explain the sororities?

Boys haze physically, girls haze psychologically.

Same principle. I don’t insist I’m correct I simply bring the concept up for review. The “sodality” concept seems to fit.

If Deng volunteered for this then he was a dumb-ass. Sorry for his family.

Me either. There are plenty of these types of hazing rituals in the military too. They all seemed based in homosexuality to me.
