Diablo Canyon is the last operating nuclear power plant in California — and arguably the most controversial. The plant sits along the scenic Central Coast and is surrounded by fault lines — one of which runs as close as 2,000 feet to the nuclear reactors.
Many fear that a single earthquake could cause a repeat of the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan, when a tsunami devastated a nuclear plant. But despite decades of public protest, the plant's operator PG&E insists that the facility is not only seismically sound, but essential.

Been to Avila Beach many times. It never occurred to me that west of the beach was a nuclear power plant. And I always did wonder what was out past the hills surrounding the town/beach.
Uh, I don’t think it will be another Fukushima.
Those reactors were flooded by the sea, and Diablo Canyon is up on cliffs above the sea.
Something that many people do not know, is that the licensing process requires those seeking the license to extensively review the geologic history of the area, including its history of tsunamis. It wouldn’t have been licensed if there was a chance it would be damaged by a tsunami.
The only reason I can think of as to why it has been dubbed California’s potential Fukushima is because of all the crybabies in California.
No, because of gaia worshippers everywhere. But the ones here in California will not be satisfied until 50% of all the state is covered by solar panels/reflectors and windmills, the residents are bankrupted by high utility bills(except the illegals who will receive taxpayer assistance) and all industry is driven out. That's their way of protecting gaia, by eliminating humans.
I’m about as pro nuclear power as you get....but, this site has a few issues:
Construction was run by the Unions.
Union workers had contests to see who could go the longest without actually doing any work....those periods were measured in weeks.
The Unions had the Quality Control staff intimidated, so many flaws went unreported.
Unit 2 was pretty far along before they recognized it was constructed 180 degrees out of synch from the design.
Aside from all of that, the enviro-whackos, who disapprove of ANY effective electric power generation, don’t care whether there are any real issues with the facility. They just want it shut down.
The bible says that in the end times “If those days had not been cut short then no one would have survived”. I believe that these nuclear power plants are a big part of the “No one would have survived” part.
In a time of real war, Natural disaster or great distress these are all ticking time bombs. We have come to know so well that they don’t need to come under direct attack by man in order to melt down. For instance if Yellow stone blew then life on the planet might surely end when all of these things in a large area melt down, and no one could do a thing to stop them from doing so. The infrastructure in the area would be gone. Roads impassable- Travel by air impossible.
They are the greatest INSANITY ever produced by man. And yes I know....75% of people here on FR are spiritually mindless in this regard and therefore will defend them.
Up until 2 years ago, we lived in the area. When you buy a house anywhere from Paso Robles to Santa Maria you are required to sign a document indicating that you understand that you live near a nuclear power plant.
The document is referred to as the “Shake and Bake Clause” :-/
Back in the 1980’s, a young female cousin of ours was hired to go around “representing” the nuclear industry. (They didn’t recognize that teeny-bopper T&A was being “used” by the nuclear industry.)
I voiced my concerns to her (and my “educamated” SIL).
They both basically called me ignorant & pooh-poohed my concerns. - I spend little to no time around either of them these days. The SIL has continued making herself annoying & condescending to me; so I finally got enough of her!
My personal experience is that each of these utility company’s that wanted to build nukes got way in over their heads too fast.
The feds should have had standardized designs for boiling water reactors and pressure water reactors. The only modification would be based upon seismic conditions. In reality each of these plants is a one off design (except for twin or triplet reactors. In Washington we had WPPSS (Washington Public Power Supply System) that set out to build 5 reactors (Plant 1&4PWR twins Richland, WA) (Plants 3&5 PWR twins, Satsop, WA) and (Plant 2 BWR Richland, WA). Plants 1&4 were completely different in building layout and design then Plants 3&5 and in the end none of those 4 were ever completed. Only plant 2 was completed in 1984 and is operational today.
My point is you can’t blame this all on the union guys standing around. We had to stand around because of the constant redesign of the smallest of systems. Multiple plants that were twins or triplets didn’t really face these issues because the first plant would get all the redesign and the later plants were built that much faster. As a example at the time they shut down Plant 1&4 plant one had been under construction for 5 years and was estimated 80% and plant 4 had only been under construction for 3 years and was 65%. The joke was that plant 4 would be completed before plant 1.

The Fukushima units were all older model BWR-type reactors which had known issues that were not addressed in time for the tsunami.
The Diablo Canyon units are PWR-type reactors that are well prepared for a 500-year seismic event.
Three years ago, I was involved in the FLEX program, which was a detailed engineering analysis to identify alternate cooling and electric power sources for nearly every plant in the country. Diablo Canyon was part of the program. This program was initiated in response to Fukushima and it addressed beyond-design-basis events. I was not involved in the Diablo Canyon evaluation, but I did not hear of any special challenges for that plant.
Ya....well, since I graduated from Kennewick High in 71, and Dad worked at Hanford from 1955-97, I’m a bit familiar w goings on at WPPSS.
Yes, in my Master’s paper on nuclear power, I too advocated for standardized designs.
It wasn’t the “standing around” I meant to emphasis, rather the control the unions had over the cost, schedule, and quality of the project.
Pressurized Water Reactor vs Boiling Water Reactor a whole different world. Even the vendor (GE) called the Nippon design unsafe. I helped build this one. Unlike Three Mile Island, where operators overrode engineered safeguards not once, not twice, but three times to come within 20 minutes of a major event, Diablo Canyon emergency systems cannot be over-ridden by idiots like Ed Fredericks and Craig Faust.
Diablo Canyon = the Devil’s Canyon. Apt name for that disaster waiting to happen.
It seems they placed a lot of nuke power plants on the coast lines subject to hurricane damage, and on fault lines for earthquake damage.
Why? It makes no sense to subject people and parts of the Nation to such a final and fatal error. Liberals call it “clean” energy. Yeah, right. It will clean the area of human and animal life, that’s for sure.
