Venezuela's top beer scarce amid heat wave

Venezuelans are facing the prospect of a heat wave without their favorite beer, the latest indignity in a country that has seen shortages of everything from disposable diapers to light bulbs.

Cerveceria Polar, which distributes 80 percent of the beer in the socialist South American country, began shutting down breweries this week because of a lack of barley, hops and other raw materials, and has halted deliveries to Caracas liquor stores.

"This is never-never land," said Yefferson Ramirez, who navigated a rush of disgruntled customers Thursday behind the counter at a corner store in posh eastern Caracas. The shop has been out of milk and bottled water for months, but the beer shortfall is provoking a new level of irritation.

"People more freaked out about losing beer than water — it shows how distorted our priorities have become here," Ramirez said.

Yefferson Ramirez

This is a reminder that the Founders of this Republic are in many respects honored more elsewhere than they are here. How many children in the US are named after Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Franklin or Hamilton (whether or not you agreed with him) these days? The ones named "Madison" may be named after some Disney movie character, so that doesn't count.

You can purify water fairly easily.

Making beer is a bit more complex.

Mmmm... a nice cold malta Polar.... and an arepa cerdo...

Fate worse than death!!! On another note ... how is their hard liquor supply? Any “port” in a storm, as it were.

Yes.

That is on the list of things yet to be done although I could cobble something together with the supplies on hand.

Things that flavor, things that sooth and comfort and things that please. That is what is going to be in demand for trade goods.

I hope this plays out for a long time, although it seems there will be civil war before too long.

Sadly, the world needs a constant example of the running failure of socialism before their eyes just to make smart people think twice.

It’s easy to make fun of them, but what’s going on in Venezuela is nothing short of criminal and a human caused human tragedy. In a sane world, the US marines would land in Caracas, and take Maduro and his henchmen back to some dank cell to stand trial, while the government renormalizes.

“Brewing skills”

I made some ‘death wine’ one time. Right up there in quality with what they brew in prison cells.
