I will not respect people dealing with depression for their mental illness, but they certainly have my sympathy. I will not respect people who incorrectly believe they are Moses, Jesus, or Napoleon, but they also have my sympathy. And the same goes for men who believe they are women, women who believe they are men, and children who believe they are puppies: sympathy, yes; respect for their delusions, no.
