Lawsuit Asks Major League Baseball To Put Up Safety Nets All The Way To Foul Poles
consumerists ^ | July 13, 2015

The complaint contends that MLB stadiums only have enough safety netting to protect “VIP” patrons in the most expensive seats immediately near the home plate area and leaves the rest of the lower level seats at risk for injury.

The lawsuit is seeking class-action status to represent anyone who purchased a season ticket to a major or minor league baseball game and whose seats are located in any exposed area between home plate and the the right and left field foul poles.

Rather than looking for a cash payout, the plaintiff is asking for the court to require that all MLB and minor league stadiums be retrofitted to protect the fans in these seats.

There is a thing called standing in law and I believe that without any real damages one lacks standing to file a lawsuit or claim damages.

They did away with smoking and now no foul balls as souvenirs. Next they will only sell O’Doul’s near beer and steamed cauliflower instead of hot dogs, peanuts and real beer. Oh, and you’ll have to take public transportation to the games, which will only be played during the day to reduce the carbon footprint. $80 for upper deck no doubt...

——The plaintiff, a self-described “devout fan” of the Oakland A’s, notes that “1,750 spectators are injured each year by wayward baseballs,” which is more frequently than a hitter at the plate is struck by a pitch.——

1,750 fans are injured? ....I’m calling BS...

The last Tigers game I attended there was a young girl who was seated directly behind home plate and was grasping the safety net with both hand and had her face up against it.

The batter hit a foul tip and the ball sailed back and hit the girl square in the face..........

I don't know, it's a tough call. With more and more of today's bats breaking and sailing off into the stands, maybe there is some justification for additional protection of the spectators........

When it comes down to it, the decision will be lawsuit driven and that's just the way it is..........

Boston's net wasn't big enough. The net needs to be big enough to protect the folks where the ball or bat can get there in a hurry. Most parks have those.

This is going to far. It's every fan's God-given right to try to catch a foul ball souvenir.

Broken bats are an issue. Let’s go with aluminum bats, annotate the record books, and eliminate a significant hazard to players and to a lesser extent the fans. As far as foul balls go pay attention or take your chances. You can block the smell with a touch of Vicks at the nostril or bathe regularly.

Do that and the white people might actually riot...!

Aluminum bats would ruin the game...Very, very bad idea...
