I love those old “Dragnet” shows which air regularly on one of the local offbeat cable channels - Friday walks like a zombie but his diatribes against hippies, marijuana, and police who aren’t one-hundred percent legit are so earnest and naïve they’re refreshing and inarguable - and he always gets the last word.....

Me too. But I could never get used to the Bill Gannon character. For me, Joe Friday’s sidekick was always supposed to be Officer Frank Smith.
(I guess I should order the DVD’s of those ancient original shows!)

Yeah, the Gannon character’s always seemed a little grating and artificial to me - maybe it’s because of some of the later roles Harry Morgan played, such as Col Potter on M*A*S*H - while I despise the self-righteous and buffoonish character Alan Alda played (perhaps not too far from the truth) I thought Potter was a sympathetic and likable sort....
