Because just reporting the news will not fill 24 hours, which brings me to my “I hate the 24 hour news cycle” rant. Worst thing to ever happen to TV news IMO.

I saw a guy get hit in the knee-cap with an axe one time and the poor soul says "It's OK, it only cut my jeans."
I go "I don't think so, you'd better take another look", and sure enough it had split his kneecap.
