Rights group condemns Colorado bike club's 'anti-Ramadan' barbecue

DENVER (Reuters) - A civil rights group said on Friday it was deeply disturbed by reports that a Colorado motorcycle club has distributed flyers for an anti-Ramadan barbecue, including a pig roast, this weekend "in defiance of the Islamic holiday of Ramadan."

Scott Levin, regional director of the Mountain States Anti-Defamation League (ADL), said in a statement the "open bike party" was being advertised by the Colorado Springs chapter of the Infidels Motorcycle Club.

"Holding an event mocking the Muslim observance of Ramadan, a holy time in the Muslim faith, is highly offensive and abhorrent. As a community, we must reject anti-Muslim bigotry whenever and wherever it surfaces," Levin said.

It was not immediately possible to reach the Colorado Springs chapter of the Infidels Motorcycle Club for comment.

Muslims worldwide observe Ramadan, during which many abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours.

The Gazette, a local newspaper in Colorado Springs, reported on Friday that the fliers were found posted around the Fort Carson Army Base, on the southern outskirts of the city, and were immediately taken down.

The newspaper said the flier features a depiction of the Prophet Mohammed, a woman wearing the upper half of a burka, and a picture breaking down the parts of a pig.

It also has an explicit reference to the Islamic State militant group, the paper said, and promises "patriotism, brotherhood, food and drinks, merchandise, music and good times" at the Infidels' headquarters in the Cimarron Hills area, northeast of Colorado Springs.

I just read a column by John Derbyshire about Ramadan in Sweden. It seems the Muslims are perturbed by the fact the sun shines almost all day that far north, and they're not supposed to eat while the sun is shining.

Derbyshire suggested it was Allah's way of telling Muslims they shouldn't be living that far north.

We ate at a Mexican place tonight. I ordered enchiladas. The waiter asked if I wanted beef, chicken or pork.

Went to an Asian shopping center to eat tonight. Parking lot is usually a mess. Since it was still daylight, there was plenty of parking for the restaurants. Didn’t realize so many Muzzies must shop/eat there. And the local Buddist temple was packing folks in in shifts last night. Plies of shoes and sandals on the sidewalk outside.

In Svalbard, Norway, the northernmost inhabited region of Europe, there is no sunset from approximately April 19 to August 23.

Even as far south as Stockholm, sunset today was approx. 10:00 PM and sunrise tomorrow will be approx. 3:30 AM --- that's approx 18 1/2 daylight hours, and 5 1/2 nighttime hours.

This year Ramadan is approximately June 18 - July 17 (I say approx. because this is a lunar month and depends on the actual sighting of the moon.) So in swaths of northern Europe, you could go through the entire month of Ramadan with only 0 to 5 after-sunset hours (deep in the middle of the night) when you would be permitted to eat.

Which is to say, Happy Ramadan! --- if you're really, really into fasting.

The Moslems should invoke shariah and require that the sun shine for no more than 12 hours during Ramadan. Truly, though, it is a signal from Allah that Moslems should not be resident in these latitudes. To a Moslem there is no “cause and effect.” Everything is directly willed by Allah and this, too is Allah’s will and good moslems should avoid the place.
