Charleston: Another mass shooting, another fight over gun control
Christian Science Monitor ^ | June 19, 2015 | Brad Knickerbocker

As with so many other times in recent years, Wednesday night’s mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., has stirred the debate over gun control. Still, given political realities and public opinion, it seems unlikely that new laws regulating gun ownership will result.

To some pro-gun types, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, the church’s pastor, who was killed Wednesday night along with eight other parishioners at a Bible study and prayer meeting, bears major responsibility for the tragedy. Mr. Pinckney was also a state senator, and he had voted against legislation that would have allowed gun owners to bring firearms into public places, including churches.

On his website, gun advocate John Lott writes: “Not surprising that yet another mass public shooting has taken place where guns were banned.

Gun control advocates have a different point of view.

Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence, said in a statement. “What we know is that every day, 88 lives are lost in shootings across our nation. Most of these tragedies are preventable through sensible solutions that just keep guns out of the wrong hands: solutions like expanding Brady background checks on all gun sales, and shutting down the small number of ‘bad apple’ gun dealers that supply almost all crime guns.”

In the Charleston case, many facts remain to be determined.

What’s known so far: Alleged shooter Dylann Roof acted alone, authorities say. Mr. Roof bought his .45 caliber handgun himself legally from a Charleston gun shop. (It was not a birthday gift from his father, as initially reported, although birthday money may have been involved.) Roof has been described by friends and family as introverted and with few friends. He had been heard making racist statements, but had no obvious mental or emotional impairments...

In the Charleston case, many facts remain to be determined.

Here are some facts that do not remain to be determined:

The gun used was a handgun with a standard 7 round magazine and Roof managed to kill 9 people. A high capacity magazine ban would have done nothing to save anyone. Similarly, an assault rifle ban would have done nothing to prevent this. Furthermore, there are plenty of .357 magnum revolvers with a capacity of 7 and even 8 rounds out there so a ban on semi automatic handguns would have done nothing as well.

Roof was not insane. He was evil, but not insane. Closing the "gun show loop hole" would not have stopped him from obtaining a firearm.

The shooting occurred in a gun free zone- as usual.

One man with a gun sitting in those pews could have saved more lives than any gun control law that Barack Obama could ever pass. Period.

Liberals will go so far as to defend Roof before they will acknowledge that he is ultimately responsible for those 9 deaths. They insist that racism and gunz are to be blamed and punished for this horrible deed. They will hold millions of decent law abiding gun owning Americans responsible for this crime before they will hold Dylan Roof accountable because they aren't interested in justice or public safety, they are interested in disarming their political opposition.

Don’t confuse the Left with facts and logic.

Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. 15 were killed this week, 10 last week, most in south Chicago. Gun laws are not the answer. A culture of hate is the cause.

How many people die of mass shootings every year? Much less than 100.

40,000 Americans die in car accidents every year, 2 million per year of cancer.

Even with news media massive coverage of every mass shooting egging on mentally unstable copy cats mass shootings are still a statistically insignificant event in a country of 330 million people. 99.9999999999% of American gun owners have never been mass shooters but the news media cherry picks these mass shootings the news media create (copy cats) to take away all of our gun rights.

We all play into the media brainwashing by talking about this as if it were news and not just a media agenda event .We don't call the media out on what they are doing and we talk like this is a common event or issue. it's not it's marxist propaganda

So nearly three times as many died in Chicago over the past couple of weeks as died in Charleston but not a peep with blacks kill blacks or any other race. Is it any wonder the crazies are coming out of the woodwork?

Yep. These are my new favorite gun control graphs:

Guns clearly aren't the problem that drugs are but, for some reason, liberals never seem to want to address the drug problem in America.

It seems that in much the same way that liberals are unable to accept blame or responsibility for anything they may have done, liberals are unable to assign blame to anyone else for whatever that person has done.

We know who committed the crime, yet liberals blame guns and racism. They seem unable to blame Roof. Strange.

Closing the "gun show loop hole" would not have stopped him from obtaining a firearm.

Having felony charges hanging over his head didn't prevent Roof from passing a background check, illustrating that NICS is yet another government agency that can't do its job right.

Too bad the graphs are not larger and more legible for others to use to support our argument.

Ask bammy if he'll disarm the secret service detail for him and his family.

Ask any liberal celebraty if they'll give up their armed security details.

We know the answer.

There is something extremely fishy about this case, I’m not sure I buy it completely. Kid with no history of mental illness or racism suddenly starts making racist comments to his friends who thought he was joking, he gets a handgun for his birthday, gee how convenient, and does something that immensely helps the Obama agenda of banning guns and making white Americans look racist. It’s just falls too perfectly into the palms of Obamas hands, pushing the Obama agenda if you know what I mean, I mean when is the last time white racists killed blacks in a church? 1963? 52 years ago? And gee whiz, all of a sudden we get a repeat of that. We get a KKK style execution of blacks in a church of all places. I’m getting a real stink of an agenda going on here. We knew something like this would happen the closer we got to 2016. What’s going to happen next, is a white guy going to bomb a rap concert killing a few hundred, a few thousand blacks? Is some white guy going to shoot up black kids playing in the street? It just seems to me something really vile is going on in this country, something that has an agenda to throw it into anarchy. All this faux racism, the riots, the attack on cops. People should be vigilant because this country is under attack in my opinion.

When you look at the actual reality, liberals are willfully endangering our lives and the lives of our friends and family members by fabricating false arguments in support of a completely disingenuous political agenda.

Too bad the bible study wasn’t held at a local gun store.

As long as these asses keep pushing metaphorical "contraceptive salt licks" instead of just allowing hunters to control the deer population, even the dimmest low-info-voter will intuitively know they're utterly full of shit.

You don't militantly advocate for chopsticks because forks are "ineffective."

And don't underestimate the evil genius of their "thought leaders", who have so thoroughly turned their followers into lemmings, eager and willing to march over a cliff at their master's command.

They truly believe that "two and two are five" if that is what Big Brother dictates.
