Though he approached the issue in a calm, deliberate manner, one Florida sheriff ruffled more than a few feathers with his recent indictment of prevailing sentiments within the black community. Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan began a recent video address by questioning the common practice of identifying blacks as African-American.
I am fourth generation Welsh, he said. I or my family do not pretend, nor do we say, we are Welsh-American. We are Americans. I was not born in Wales and the blacks that currently reside in the United States of America are not from Africa.
As for the grievances often cited by civil rights leaders, Morgan contended that most of them are perceived.
He backed up his position by pointing out that blacks have attained positions of immense power within the U.S. in recent years most notably, Barack Obama.
Not that many years ago, he continued, the thought of electing an African-American president would have been unthinkable in the United States of America; and I would remind black Americans that you are a little less than 13 percent of the population in the United States.
On its own, he explained, the black community does not have enough electoral power to win an election.
A whole host of white people and Hispanic people and Asian people and American Indians cast a vote for President Obama, he said.
Despite overwhelming evidence that Americans as a whole are becoming less focused on race, he said, some black leaders are quick to focus on specific instances of where we may have had a problem with race relations while ignoring contrary signs.
In fact, he concluded that the black community is responsible for much of its own plight by embracing what he deemed a thug culture, which he said promotes violence against cops and women as well as abusive language.
If you dont think those things have an effect on our children, he said, you need to get a grip.
While some left-leaning outlets used Morgans remarks in an effort to paint him as a racist, many supporters recognized the intent behind the address as an effort to address an issue that affects the nation as a whole.

Well if we are to have a conversation about race in America, some concepts must be thrown into the ring for discussion.
OTOH this guy will be pilloried for THOUGHTCRIME.
Unfortunately he’s the wrong color to be expressing such truths. Gutsy move.
He’s been doing it for quite a while with very little criticism here.
Nuffin-Twitter erupts in outrage...
Is he really so ignorant as to not know how that came about?
How old is he?
The black inner city poor community has been attacked and essentially destroyed by the Democrat party. This needs to be shouted from the highest mountain top as often as possible. Explain the Great Society and what it was intended to do and has done to the black community. All to keep blacks voting for Democrats. And let’s not forget the slaughter of their babies. The evil perpetrated upon the black community is almost beyond comprehension. What the sheriff addresses are symptoms / results of the Democrat Party attack.
He’s just telling it like it is.
Just, wow!
Get off the guy’s ass. What he says is actually spot on.
This is a success story, not promoted enough, of a black man ,Calvin Tillman, who graduated from college this week.
Tillman spent more than 18 years in prison after being convicted of a crime he didnt commit. And exactly nine years to the day after walking out of prison a free manexonerated by new DNA evidence and the work of the Connecticut Innocence Projecthe spoke before the Goodwin College Class of 2015 as their chosen student representative and the recipient of an associate degree in Human Services.
You cant take away my smile, my joy of life, and my encouragement to others to be the best they can be, Tillman told his classmates. Thats what its all about. Love and forgiveness.
Thats why, as hard as it may be for you to believe, I can stand here, look you straight in the eye, and tell you that my experience in prison was a gift, he said, because it gave me the power of conviction. I learned that love will always be stronger than hate.
Tillman wrote a book about his experience, The Power of Conviction: My Wrongful Conviction, 18 Years in Prison, and the Freedom Earned Through Forgiveness and Faith, a copy of which was given to each Goodwin graduate following the ceremony.

Anyone who posts support for this sheriff on any social media site stands the chance of being fired.
“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” Orwell
As different as we are, “African Americans” are more like me than I am like German Irish Scots, as this “Welsh American” points out.
It’s past time to put away the artificial respect, and time to risk disrespecting those who deserve no respect, and to start talking about how to address the problems black people apparently can’t resolve on their own.
As he further points out, a good start would be to begin attacking thug culture instead of glorifying it, and risk being called racist—even by some here—for taking the fight to the criminals instead of continuing with this gutless current policy of, for lack of better words, salutary neglect.
