The Coronado National Forest, Douglas Ranger District, will close the Cochise Stronghold Campground on June 1 due to increasing temperatures that occur in that location during the summer. Recreationists can still enjoy dispersed camping in both the East and West Stronghold areas. Campers are encouraged to practice Leave-No-Trace and extinguish campfires completely during their camping experience. The campground is scheduled to reopen on August 28, 2015. For more information please contact the Douglas Ranger District located at 1192 W. Saddleview Road in Douglas,...

Having spent the summer of 1982 at Ft. Huachuca, this makes sense. And of course if you go hiking off the beaten path there are the old mines that one can fall into because the boards they may have been covered with a century ago are too rotted to support any weight.

I’ve hiked there in the mid summer. And you can find old mines ANYWHERE in southern Arizona.

If it is just closing the campground because the number of visitors during the summer doesn’t justify the expense of keeping it open, that is fine.

I used to ne Irish and Indian, now that the Irish have turned queer I am just Indian and I resent the forest service having control over land stolen from my ancestors.

That is unfortunate. July and August is monsoon season and one of my favorite times to visit the Stronghold is when it is raining. Up in the mountains it isn’t as hot as down in the valley and often right about the hottest time of the day a quick thunderstorm will come through knock the temperatures down 10-15 degrees and make the waterfalls run for a few minutes.

I never stay in the campground though. I have family living there.

My Grandpa grew up in Bisbee close to there. It has been a few years since I’ve been out to visit my folks there but they are getting older and aren’t in the best of health to host us with our young kids.
