I would hope the next step is suing whomever let a mentally ill woman have a knife in the first place. Case should have been dismissed when brought up.

The case raises some interesting questions?

• What could the police do differently with a mentally deranged person vs a criminal with evil intent?
• If they can safely subdue a person using less force, aren't they obligated to do so regardless of the motive/mental state?
• And if they can't safely subdue a person who is mentally deranged, why not? Are there no alternatives?

How can a police officer, or ANYONE, know whether an unknown attacker is “mentally ill?”

Should we ask them from the other side of the grave?

What worse than crazy is this got all the way up to the Supreme Court.

Because it is so easy to tell the difference between a crazy person and a ‘sane’ person. We all know “armed and violent” insane people can’t hurt you as fast as a ‘normal’ armed and violent sane person.
