Now I enjoy a bit of good ol' astrobiological speculation as much as the next guy, after all, who doesn't? But the scenario that the aliens communicate by smell, well it just stinks.

Driven forward by their lust for adventure and acute sense of smell, the aliens sniffed towards the stars. They were able to sniff their way through interstellar space where they were able to intercept and collect Voyager in order to give the plaque a good, deep sniff and decide there's nothing of interest about it. Dejected, they turned around for the familiar smells of home only to be distracted by the delightful scents wafting off a nearby fire hydrant...

Interstellar olfactory navigation just doesn't strike me as particularly practical. Unless, perhaps, there's a fat ol' government grant available to pursue this line of research...
