Maxmilian, the savagely beaten pitbull terrier mix who was found with missing footpads and cigarette burns in San Francisco last week, had to be euthanized Sunday morning after his kidneys failed, Animal Care And Control officers said.
"He endured so much abuse that his body was not able to recover despite the vet staff's efforts," Animal Care And Control San Francisco said on its Facebook page. "There was nothing more to be done," volunteer Deb Campbell told NBC Bay Area.
A $10,000 reward was offered by Maddie's Fund for information in the case after the pup was found at 6 a.m. last Thursday under the U.S. Highway 101 overpass near South Van Ness Avenue with severe injuries, including blunt force trauma to his head and body and broken and missing teeth. His paws were severely injured and were missing pads and nails and there were cigarette burn marks on his body.
"Absolutely broke my heart when I saw him this morning, lying on his side, but still managed to wag his tail at me," said a May 15 post on the agency's Facebook page.
Campbell said the reward offer generated lots of leads. "Because of it our animal control officers were able to find Max's owner — Max had been stolen from him early last week," Campbell said. "Our captain arranged for him to be with Max at the end when he was euthanized, so at least he was able to hear his owner's voice one last time."
"It's been hard on our staff. but they are determined to find who did this to Max, and are pursuing many leads," Campbell said.

What a horrible shame. I truly hope they find the subhumans that did this to this poor dog and that the SAME treatment is accorded them. They don’t deserve any mercy whatsoever. None. I will bet that this is not the first dog they have stolen to carry out such heinous deeds on. If they are not caught and dealt with to the fullest extent of the law (and then some extra-legal additions added on), they will continue to leave a path of misery and suffering behind them.

I loathe this breed, and yet even more loathesome are those who breed and abuse them.

Anyone with a vicious dog problem would have it put down more or less humanely, not try to wreak systematic revenge on the dumb animal.

I wonder if the hate for this breed has any limits. I thought everybody knew that once a Pit bites it never releases, no wait, they have the most powerful bite of any dog, no that's not true either, all pits are killers,hmmm no that's not right either. I know maybe it's the simple most logical answer it was because there is some sick, twisted, sadistic, human animal out there.
It is rare if ever to find an animal as cruel as people are.

I don’t like these dogs either, but this was a young dog that was stolen and then basically tortured to death.
Whoever did this needs to go to jail for along time.
I saw another story over on Facebook, about some poor cat who was thrown from a car. He lost his tail and one leg, but they think he will recover.
I’m no animal rights nut, not by any means, but people who are so cruel and vicious to innocent creatures are despicable.

Heartbreaking. Judging by the area and the abuse I would test the burns for menthols. Sick freak thug gangsters love dog fighting.
The dog was stolen out of someone’s yard. I don’t like pit bulls either, but whoever tortured this animal is a poor excuse for a human.
Serial killers often start out as animal abusers. They need to find this person, charge him with the maximum sentence, and then watch him very closely from then on.
