“Actually, speed often holds up very well at marathon distances.”
Ridiculous.
But you sound like most of the fools I meet at the racetrack. You think you know what your talking about, until you have to borrow cab money for the ride home.
According to Baffert both his horses were on the engine for the Derby. I think Firing Line was one race short, due to minor injury.(41 day lay off) He still ran a spectacular race in the Derby. He was lightly raced, and his race in New Mexico was basically a walk over(won by 14 lengths and the trainer sent him there for the purse money so he would insure eligibility for the Derby)
I think he is on the engine now and will be tough to beat.
Da Tara would go against that claim.
Belmont is more about the track and less about the distance. The turns are much wider, the rail is much deeper and the stretch run is developed by how the positioning into the far turn goes.
American P was ridden very hard to get to wire in the Derby and Firing Line was a classic Stevens ride, try to steal it ala Oxbow. He doesn’t have the pedigree to hang here.
That leaves Dortmund.......American P won’t get the same trip or set up here and he may get pinched a bit into the first turn unless he leaps out of the gate then he’ll need to deal with Firing line.
I would look to a horse like Frosted or Materiality in the Belmont to upset the apple cart if American P gets the win tomorrow. Breeding there suggests they can handle the distance and both will have top notch NY jockeys that are hyper familar with Belmont.
I bet 100 win and place on him in the Derby. I watched him at LA race course in his first race back from his two yr old season. He lost by a head to Dortman, desperately needing the race.
Check it out for yourself at this link, dumb*ss.

Speed horses have held up extremely well in the Belmont. They of course don’t always win, but they often hang on for a share and are not beaten by very much.

Secretariat was the Babe Ruth of Horse Racing. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Secretariat still holds the record in all three races that make up the Triple Crown. Unbelievable.
Whenever I see the Horse named “Firing Line”, I hear a trumpet playing Brandenburg Concerto #2.
1. American Pharoah
2. Firing Line
3. Dortmund
4. Divining Rod
You can read his analysis here.
Here’s a classic example of speed in the 1-1/2 mile Belmont Stakes working out very well, in this case, for the wire-to-wire winner, Bold Forbes, with jockey Angel Cordero Jr, up. I know it seems unintuitive, but speed does often hold up well at marathon distances. The 2-1/4 mile Display Hdcp at Aqueduct was usually won by a front runner. They stopped running the Display Hdcp decades ago, probably out of concern for the horses.

Well, if theres one horse that could do that, its American Pharoah. Hes looking really strong.

Ridiculous, eh?
Like I said above, early speed may not always win, but it does hang on quite well. Here are the past 7 Belmont Stakes...

Hey!
GOOD to see you, stranger!!!
Post Time?
For what, the Preakness??
The Preakness was May 16th. :)
Disregard my stupid question. I was thinking of the Belmont and it
didn’t really register you post was back before the preakness.
Not sure of the post time for the upcoming Belmont Stakes (June 6th), but will probably be somewhere around 6:30 or 6:40.
Here’s a recent thread I posted on the Belmont Stakes.
