Did Black People Own Slaves? (42% of Freed Slaves did)

William Ellison's fascinating story is told by Michael Johnson and James L. Roark in their book, Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South. At his death on the eve of the Civil War, Ellison was wealthier than nine out of 10 white people in South Carolina. He was born in 1790 as a slave on a plantation in the Fairfield District of the state, far up country from Charleston. In 1816, at the age of 26, he bought his own freedom, and soon bought his wife and their child. In 1822, he opened his own cotton gin, and soon became quite wealthy. By his death in 1860, he owned 900 acres of land and 63 slaves. Not one of his slaves was allowed to purchase his or her own freedom.

Black History Month: When 1/2 of the black population gets mad at whites for the other 1/2 enslaving their ancestors.

This thread is doomed ... politically incorrect, wrong section of the country ..... what, integrating slavery? Whatever shall we do for moral superiority and smugness? Oh, deah me! <faint, swoon>

First Mr. H.K. Edgerton integrates the Battle Flag, and now slavery itself? <more swooning>

That little fact is to be wiped from the history books due to political correctness, meaning you can only hate white people, and blame them for whatever you want in order to justify it.

A freeper had a thread awhile ago. Back in the 1600’s it was common in the colonies to have people work for you for 7 years and then you would give them a parcel of land.

One owner didn’t want the guy to leave after the seven years, and won in court to have him stay on as a permanent slave. The first true slave. Both the owner and the slave were black!

I just saw this article on reddit. it is a very pro liberal site as most of you know. most of those posting comments there have the opinion that who ever posted it was a troll and that just bringing up black ownership of slaves is racist in it self. I think it would be interesting if we could link slave ownership to Jessie Jackson or al Sharpton.

Prof. Henry Gates, as in Obama’s beer summit friend? Maybe the article won’t be erased, just stashed away somewhere.

The significance of this article in the modern era lies in what it does not mean:

It does not mean that because blacks as well as whites were slaveholders that slavery is any less repugnant.

It does not mean that because blacks as well as whites were slaveholders that white slaveholders are posthumously exonerated.

But it also does not mean:

That descendents of African-Americans who were slaveholders are vicariously guilty.

That all African-Americans are vicariously guilty because some African-Americans, both male and female, were slaveholders.

That white celebrities who had slaveholding ancestors should be relieved of their shame-Ben Affleck will be pleased-because they had no cause for shame in the first place.

That all whites today are no longer vicariously guilty because some whites were slaveholders-they were never guilty, vicariously or otherwise, in the first place.

The significance of this article lies in the satiric observations of lentulusgracchus.

Never heard this before.

I’d like to know if it is really true or just anecdotal.

It’s true. The history books were scrubbed of these facts long ago. The holoder of the most slaves in Lousiana was also a free negro, who had the largest sugarcane operation in the state.

Anthony Johnson (1600-1670) was one of the first Free Negroes to own indentured servants (4 white and 1 black).
Famous for a suit to reclaim a black slave who tried to get a neighboring landowner to claim him as property.

It’s up on WIKI

Back in the 1600’s it was common in the colonies to have people work for you for 7 years and then you would give them a parcel of land.

That policy existed in Virginia. Only about one in seventeen indentured servants actually lived out his seven year indenture and collected his 50 acres. From the time they stepped of the boat they were worth more dead than alive to their masters since it was the master who collected the 50 acres if the servant died. Most of them died within two years.

The indentured servant model never really flourished in South Carolina. South Carolina, or more precisely "Charles Town", was settled by Englishmen from Barbados who had a generation of slave plantation management under their belts before they got here. They brought their slaves with them.

Well, I’m white, and I’m a descendant of indentured servitude, so I guess I’m one of the fortunate.

Some rebellious Scotsmen were sold here as slaves rather than indentured servants.
