Submission to Governing Authorities

Submission to Governing Authorities

Romans 13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

More Bible verses....

Hebrews 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

Titus 3:1 Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work,

Romans 13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

Thank God our founding fathers believed differently than St. Paul or we would all be singing ‘God Save the Queen’ at sporting events.

How does the Word of God relate to the popular libertarian agenda that our leaders and our government is to be held with a high degree of distrust and even contempt?

Another passage from 1 Peter 2:13-17...

13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. 16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. 17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.
"do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil". I love that. It flies in the face of the libertarian agenda that we should legalize drugs, or porn or abortion or etc.

Did they really believe differently? Or did they set in place basic Biblical values. Values that are tossed aside these days.

Question. How is singing ‘God Save the Queen’ any better or worse than singing ‘God Bless America’?

So where is the “escape clause” that says, “When those doing the governing are evil, fight against them.”

There were examples in the OT of disobeying authorities,
when those authorities required something prohibited by God,
or prohibited something required by God.

Martin Luther is a great extra-biblical example as well.

True. The Book of Daniel is all about that.

As the Constitution is the highest law of the land, those that are not following it are NOT lawful rulers.

Also

“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

You may notice that, while muttering dissent, American patriots remain remarkably law-abiding and indeed submit to lawfully elected & appointed authorities. There has been no violent rebellion; talk & preparation in that direction remains wholly a matter of buttressing the boundaries of law, reminding leadership that they too are subject to law. In fact, what we agitate for is continued adherence by officials to the instituted government precisely because our Constitutional republic has been, to describe it in good faith if not perfect doctrine, instituted by God.

“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

That doesn't preclude Caesar being due an ass kicking.

“who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right”

If they are not punishing the wrong and commending the right they would no longer be sent by God ?

Do you not know the difference? If the founding fathers had decided to meekly obey the king we would still be a British colony.

We do not fight against them.
We stand prepared for when they fight against us.
As in the Battle of Athens TN, the people prepare for when governing authorities step outside their authority and transition from governance to tyranny.

Yeah, the best way to handle federal government overreach is to ignore them and prepare for them to try to make us not ignore them.

In our form of government, the people are the governing authority.

Amazing that some conservatives can't wrap their head around that concept.

It’s important to remember this when dealing with anti-Christians that like to throw Bible verses at us. When the issue of taxes and spending comes up, they like to tell us to surrender unto Caesar. We are Caesar, not those sitting on Capitol Hill; therefore, it is the political class that must surrender to our will.

Once they’ve stepped outside of the governing authority of the Constitution,
they no longer are legitimate,
and only rule by force.
