Posted on 04/30/2015 11:53:24 AM PDT by BenLurkin

Over the course of April 28–29 a gigantic filament, briefly suspended above the surface* of the Sun, broke off and created an enormous snakelike eruption of plasma that extended millions of miles out into space. The event was both powerful and beautiful, another demonstration of the incredible energy and activity of our home star…and it was all captured on camera by two of our finest Sun-watching spacecraft.

Plasma Snake would have been a cool name for a heavy metal band in the 80’s.

Our sun is one of the smallest and most stable stars there are. Imagine a giant or supergiant star’s activity.

For scale, at 8,000 miles in diameter, you can place 110 planet earths side-by-side across the diameter of the nearly 1 million mile wide Sun (the white ring in the graphic).

This is why the Sun is closely monitored nowadays, especially now we're just past the Solar Maximum peak. This is a period we could get gigantic coronal mass ejections (CME's) or even a really big X Class solar flare, something that if it directly hits the Earth could cause a repeat of the famous Carrington event of 1859, but with much more destructive consequences in knocking out the planet's electric power grid.

I thought that our sun was bigger than about 80% of the other stars.
