Apple Watch Sport edition costs $349 and has an Ion-X glass screen.

It has been described as a durable and scratch resistant smartwatch and is a considerable investment, costing from $349.
But the Apple Watch Sport model has been to shown to shatter easily after being dropped from a height of just under four feet (1.2 metres).
Apple claims its watch, which has an Ion-X glass display, is 'protected by a lightweight aluminosilicate glass that's especially resistant to scratches and impact.

In a video, TechRax drops the 42mm timepiece from a height of four feet (1.2 metres) to simulate what may happen if a wearer drops their watch while tightening or unfastening the strap.
When TechRex dropped the watch ‘not aiming at the display,’ in a test conducted in Sacramento, California, it survived unscathed despite a nasty ‘crack’ noise when the timepiece hit the pavement.
However, when the watch was dropped so the display hit the floor first, the screen shattered with beads of glass seen on the ground after impact.

Technically, anything is impact resistant, including soap bubbles. It’s only when you go beyond its tolerance that you break things.

An “impact resistant” watch must be like “water restistant” boots a guy tried on at the store and asked the sales clerk what “water resistant” meant. The clerk replied, “That means they WILL leak, but they don’t want to.”

Please do not drop your Apple Watch on concrete.
I've had iPads, iPhones and iPads for over 10 years now. I have never once dropped any of these devices on concrete and they have given me years of reliable use. In fact, the iPod I keep in my car has been used practically every single day for 10 years.
So with regard to the Apple Watch, do not drop it on concrete!

I wear a $3500 Stürhling watch. . . it has a large exposed crystal. I have had it for three years. I have NEVER taken it on or off standing over concrete. . . and when I do take it off, I have never dropped it. Could I have dropped it? Of course. But I take care not to drop it. It too is "impact resistant" not "shatter proof." When I do take it off, I am standing over a dressing table in my bedroom, or sitting down at a table. I am certainly NOT standing outside on the sidewalk where it can fall on concrete.
I have accidentally hit my Stürhling against walls, metal railings, and even concrete with quite a bit of force, probably more force than a fall of four feet could impart too it. but the crystal on my watch is sapphire. So too will be the display on the Apple Watch I ordered. That was one of the reasons I decided against the Ion Glass Apple Watch Sport. I am not going to take a chance.
It’s almost as if they expect you to strap it to yourself somewhere, like on your wrist or something.

While the screen couldn't be used while in the pool, because of the capacitive screen technology, when it was fished out afterwards it functioned as normal.

That is one butt ugly watch. I’ll stick with my Timex.
Funny when something is built to do a specific task it tends to do it quite well. Remember (if you're an old fart like me) the timex commercials with the watch strapped to the prop of a high speed outboard motor submerged in a tank of water and revved at high RPM? Those Timex DID TAKE A LICKIN AND KEEP ON TICKIN! Inexpensive,quality made long lasting product for the masses, unlike our now moderately high, and high priced devices designed and built for planned obsolescence. Same thing that happened to cars, built beyond the ability of shadetree mechanics abilities and access to replacement parts.
Well, when all you want is a 200 year old technology, another few years won’t bring much change. When you want to use technology that is still being developed and invented things are going to change a little more often. It’s not so much planned obsolescence as it is just using things before the development is mature. In 200 years maybe computer technology will be so mature that new things aren’t happening very often. Not everybody wishes to wait that long. Some of it is useful enough already. Next year it’ll be better. But that’s next year.
