“Ford could do those things in a world with far lower taxes and much less regulation.”

Maybe less regulation, but income taxes for the highest earners were 80% to over 90% in the forties when the union started at Ford.

Kaiser Permanente? I think they were a big contracting company and began the first health maintenance organization for its employees.

Ford made the reforms much earlier than that. Before the 16th amendment if I’m not mistaken.

I’m jealous but then again, I was a little shy back in 61 when I first got my license. Now, ‘62 was Katy Bar The Door time.

BINGO!

Thanks. It was just one of those "tip of the brain" things that I couldn't quite dislodge from my memory banks.

"I’ll put my family’s 57 Chevy 210 up against most of the stuff on the road today."

We had a '56 Chevy 210, with much of the same experiences. It was fully equipped. It had a heater, and rubber floor mats. The interior was easy to wash. My folks would pull up to a lake and throw a couple of buckets of water on the floor. I really splurged, and bought an AM radio for it in '63. The sticker price for the car was $1,600.

Thanks. Great link. Lots of good historical info in a concise format.

And it turns out we can all blame Monkey Wards after all!

I got my license in ‘72, in junior high school. Took me 2-3 years to get over the shyness too....
