Lawrence Phillips, the sixth-overall pick in the 1996 draft who has been behind bars since 2008, is suspected of killing his cellmate at Kern Valley State Prison, according to a prison news release (via the Bakersfield Californian).
Early Saturday morning, Damion Soward, 37, was found unresponsive in the cell he shared with Phillips. He died Sunday at a local hospital.
...
A star at the University of Nebraska, Phillips' off-field troubles plagued him throughout NFL career and beyond. He played in just 25 NFL games with three different teams.
In 1996, the Rams thought so much of his potential, that they traded then-starter Jerome Bettis to the Steelers.

In this case, with the emphasis on crap.
In this case not so much. Phillips had a history of violence when he was at Nebraska including dragging his then ex-girlfriend down a flight of stairs and beating her up. He was drafted #5 by the Rams after the first four teams passed on him because of his violent history.
Remember, our felons play better football than your felons.
Better B-ball too.
Even while he was breaking reception records with the Patriots I wondered about his tattoos.Three dead guys later...it looks like my concerns were justified.
A lot of these guys seem to be cut out for only two career paths: professional sports or professional thugism. They also seem to struggle with which choice they are going to make between those two career tracks.
That was the best thinig that ever happened to Bettis.
I remember what his Nebraska team did to my Gators in that 95 Title Game, and at the time I thought that at least we didn’t have any thugs on our team.
Then Aaron Hernandez happened.
Osborne kept Phillips on the team even after he committed a heinous act of domestic violence. Osborne got his ring at the cost of his soul.
The Hernandez jury is still ‘deliberating for a SIXTH day.
It’s starting to look like this will be declared a mistrial.
I suspect some serious witness tampering is going on behind the scenes.
He killed a convicted murderer so I haved mixed feelings about this.
Sure he’s a thug, but in this one selfless act, he has done more to help the taxpayers of California than any politician has in the last 20 years.
If AH gets convicted, given his bodycount, he too can soon be reducing the tax burden of average Mass. residents.
Lawrence “Douchebag” Phillips. This was as predictable as a sunrise.
Lovers disagreement?
Ironically, former Gator, Rod Frazier, Tommie Frazier's brother[Nebraska] connection was no saint back then, and over the past years was had a 'hands on' approach to students, faculty and staff at his past school employment.
I always joke that the Gators are still trying to tackle Tommie Frazier. That 75-yard run is still one of the greatest plays I ever saw. Nobody was going to beat Nebraska that year.
I'm sure he'd rather have the ring.
Please. That team could have had me at RB and still won the championship.
