Editorial: No routine calls in police work
Verde Independent ^ | 3/24/2015

For several years now the online chat world has been highly critical of the Cottonwood Police Department.

These largely anonymous critics have targeted Cottonwood PD for being too heavily armed, too overly preoccupied with their militaristic arsenal of equipment and too eager to put their weaponry on public display.

"Why can't they be more like small-town cops?" the critics ask.

Saturday night, we learned why such equipment is needed and necessary, and why police need to always be prepared for the worst.

The call of a female employee being roughed up hardly served up the warning for what took place when Cottonwood officers arrived at Walmart late Saturday night.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety reports that the officers were viciously attacked almost as soon as they got out of their cars. By the time the dust settled on the parking lot brawl, one veteran Cottonwood officer had been shot in the leg, a Walmart employee trying to help the police suffered a broken arm, one of the suspects was shot in the stomach, and another was shot and killed.

All of the other officers involved suffered some kind of injury during the attack.

The lesson learned from this incident is that there is no such thing as a routine call in police work. Any call, at any time, can be dangerous and life-threatening.

Cottonwood hardly qualifies as Mayberry any more. Dolling out one bullet at a time to an officer doesn't cut it.

Like it or not, police today always have to expect the worst. Assault rifles, SWAT teams and all the other kinds of equipment that critics charge as being militaristic are a basic police reality in the world we live in today.

Bad guys don't play nice.

And there are too many bad guys out there today.

"...the officers were viciously attacked almost as soon as they got out of their cars."

Not quite. The dash cam video shows an officer already on scene as two cars show up. One driver isn't even stopped before he opens his door to jump out. The other driver is seen swinging a club as he walks up to the scene.

As far as injuries go, one cop shot another, one cop kicked another cop in the face and one cop pepper sprayed himself.

Were it not for 'roids and military arsenals, these Keystone cops might think through the situation before "going to battle".

Of course, when all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

They'll make the citizens pay for that!

***one cop pepper sprayed himself....***

So maybe it is like Mayberry after all! Especially if the cops are like Barney.

So brawls didn’t happen in the 1960s, 1950s, 1910s, 1890s?

Barney could have taken care of the situation by himself.

Cops screaming for more equipment to kill citizens more efficiently doesn’t excite me.

I get it. Cops have a tough job. So do lumberjacks and astronauts. All are professions voluntarily chosen. So having a “tough job” is an excuse for, well, nothing.

“Bad guys don’t play nice. “

That’s why the general public should be allowed to have the same kinds of weapons that the police do.

This incident was total chaos which the cops lost total control of.

As far as injuries go, one cop shot another,

Comments in the YouTube thread say that one of the "band" got the cop's gun and shot him in the leg. The video isn't clear enough. The only shot I can see fired is from a cop into the scrim.
