That’s probably because they are. And I don’t understand how that dumb song ever became so popular! Give me back 80’s music any old day!

Sure, roll out nude women and the male masses will flock. It never gets old for ya’ll? I can’t stand nudity for the sake of nudity.

No way. Marvin’s is memorable and Thicke’s isn’t.

I know that’s not the measure lol, I am saying that whatever Thicke’s is, it is not a copy and that Marvin is a genius.

To me they seem to have more of a similar feel than being a note for note copy, different melody and chords. That Ed Sheerhan song “Thinking out loud” though, my God, why isn’t that dork getting his arse sued off? That’s almost an identical copy of Marvin Gayes song “What’s going on”. First time I heard it I was wondering if this kid was simply rapping lyrics over a recording of “What’s going on” I couldn’t believe it was actually being considered an original song of his. What is it anyway with plagiarism and Marvin Gaye anyway? The sad part about all this is Gayes daughter Nona is a complete jerk, never worked a single day in her life because of daddy and compared Pharrel to a slave master “holding her in chains”. Holding her in chains? Because he wrote a song that sounds slightly like her daddys? Amazing how nobody says anything when a rich black woman says crap like that. She makes another $7 million for doing absolutely nothing, and she is held in bondage by chains. Look at this crap...

“Gaye’s daughter, Nona Gaye, wept as the verdict was read and later told reporters, “Right now, I feel free. Free from ... Pharrell Williams’ and Robin Thicke’s chains and what they tried to keep on us and the lies that were told.”

Oh boo hoo hoo hoo!! Can you imagine if someone like Lisa Marie Presley said something like that?

John Fogerty got sued for plagiarizing his own song! After awhile they did all start to sound the same.

After the trial Harrison said “it’s the same chords but not the same song.”

Oh wait duh...I meant Gayes song “Lets get it on” not “Whats going on”.....

The only reason I can think of why he got away with this is he already has Gaye credited/paid.

I have a hard time with the ruling. The ending of the double phrase (I don’t know the right words for this) in Pharrell’s version has that catchy base thing at the end that I think is what our brains enjoy. I adore Marvin Gaye but his basic song “line” doesn’t have any of the catchy bit at all.

Without that “dit-dit-dit-Duht- dit (the duht being the dropped low note) it just is not something special like Pharrell wrote.

I think the Gaye family had an attorney who really reached.

I do think whoever wrote “Jamaica Farewell” and their heirs have an excellent case against Disney then (”Kiss the Girl”) - it was too similar to make me terribly uncomfortable. But I was told it was an homage. If this Blurred Lines is not a homage, neither the heck is that one.

Just get the Gaye family’s lawyer.

Wow Gaye isn’t credited. I can’t believe this, how is this kid not getting his butt sued off?

““Gaye’s daughter, Nona Gaye, wept as the verdict was read and later told reporters, “Right now, I feel free. Free from ... Pharrell Williams’ and Robin Thicke’s chains and what they tried to keep on us and the lies that were told.””

Williams and Thicke sued the Gayes to order them to stop saying it was a copy of Gaye’s song, this ruling is the resolution of the counter-claim, from what I understand. It was a year and a half long case. And I think that it will be reduced on appeal as it looks like the jury just made their decision to punish Williams and Thicke for the original lawsuit.

While I disagree with most of the copyright system as it applies to creative works, and severely disagree that intellectual work should be held for so long (this should have been public domain decades ago), I can’t fault the jury’s choice.

Yes I think both those songs are really completely different. The only thing that is similar is the falsetto singing. Just what exactly are they saying is similar? The melodies are completely different, the chords are different, Gayes song uses an A-D-E chord structure, “Blurred lines” on the other hand is using two chords G and D with a descending bass riff after the D, this is a completely ridiculous ruling. I mean I can think of a million songs that sound more like “Got to give it up” than this, first and foremost being “Emotional rescue” by the Rolling stones. What gets me is why isn’t Ed Sheerhan being sued for BLATANTLY copying “Let’s get it on”? by Gaye? Sheerhans song “Thinking out loud” is so identical that it fits perfectly with “Let’s get it on” when you play them on top of each other. I looked up his writing credits and he doesn’t credit Gaye at all so where is the lawsuit? This is an open and shut case, it’s like someone taking a Stevie Wonder song and replacing the lyrics.

Be warned..although the “Soul Train” Clip IS “safe”, it is insufferably LAME! It is not Marvin’s best work. LOL!

Whoa, going to go listen to Sheerhan now.

I didn’t know about the six note rule but if it’s the six+ boring notes before that compelling descending bass riff, who cares? The part on both songs that is sung is absolutely different.

Maybe the Gaye family will wait til the $7 million is spent and then go sue Sheerhan.
