An adult chimp is massively powerful and never tame.

I remember when this happened. It was pretty clear that the chimp’s owner was seriously mentally ill. She treated it like a person, up to and including sleeping in the same bed with the damned thing. If I recall correctly, she was giving it Prozac or some other antidepressant.

She is VERY far down on the list of people who are qualified to own and handle a 200 lb wild animal that is three times as strong as a man.

At the time I was hoping she would go to prison, but I don’t think she was ever charged or convicted for anything.

I agree. It looks like some good may come from this horrible tragedy. I’m glad our military has people smart enough to see the potential in helping with her reconstruction and recovery.

“An adult chimp is massively powerful and never tame.”

Absolutely. Had a neighbor when I was a teen that had one. She was pretty sweet, although I saw her pick up a car key and bend it like it was a paper clip. The neighbor decided the burbs weren’t the best place after she got loose when he wasn’t home and went into a convenience store that was next door. She tore the store up before he finally got there, calmed her down and took her home. The cops were real close to shooting her. He knew a lady on the beach that also had one and moved there. Now to the how dangerous they are part. The chimp cage was an inside / outside cage so they could get fresh air or be inside. BIG sign on the outside part of the cage warning to “STAY AWAY DO NOT APPROACH OR ATTEMPT TO TOUCH THE CAGE OR ANIMALS. Sure enough two kids walked up off the beach and one of ‘em was out there. One of the kids stuck his finger into the cage to touch the chimp, and BAM, it grabbed his hand and bit his finger clean off just that quick. You are correct, they are indeed very powerful and never tame.

To understand the brute strength of any animal vs humans, try taking a 40 pound dog for a nice walk and have a squirrel run by.

If the dog has not been trained to ignore the squirrel, he could dislocate your arm running after it!

I KNOW.

Now, multiply that x5 and put a mean, nasty, simian brain behind it.
