When the Academy expanded its best picture category from five films to as many as 10 in 2009, the goal was to counter the trend toward smaller movies grabbing the Oscar spotlight and to bring in some higher-grossing studio films so the public would have more of a rooting interest in the annual awards show. At first, it worked, with the 2010 crop generating a whopping $4.7 billion worldwide (Avatar's $2.7 billion helped). But with few exceptions, it's been a gradual downward slide since then, suggesting the Academy and the public increasingly are at loggerheads. And that's bad news for potential Oscar viewership.

They make too many movies, which cost too much and a lot of them simply are just god awful.
It is about time Hollyweird’s bubble got popped and they felt the pain the average American feels.
I actually think that’s a good thing. Even though I don’t really pay attention to the Oscars it’s not supposed to be about the most popular, it’s supposed to be about the best. And those two are often not the same. That’s Kanye’s primary complaint about the Grammys too, they don’t favor the popular. And my answer to both is that’s what the People’s Choice awards are for, and there’s a good reason those are at the bottom of the prestige heap.

More like what the industry likes. The oscars are just a highschool-esque popularity contest for industry insiders.
That ‘s because Hollywood is making crappy movies many of which are written to preach rather tha entertain. There were two movies I liked this year: “guardians of the Galaxy” and “American Sniper” - both were entertaining and/or told a good story. Surprisingly enough both did very big box office.
Got my smart TV, my modem and subscriptions to Amazon, acorn tv and Netflix. Much cheaper and I can be more selective. Also, can access you tube for lots of Milton Freidman & Thomas Sowell.
Sounds like the government may need to get involved . .
I love the movies and have seen 6 of the 7 contenders this year.
“Whiplash” was one of my favorites and J.K. Simmons was incredible.
A lunch and a movie is a nice outing for Seniors like me. :-)

Look I understand that a big hit sci-fi movie that’s goofy fun like Guardians of the Galaxy won’t, and shouldn’t, win an Oscar.
But Hollywood lefties cant get over their politics and pretensions long enough to award solid, crowd-pleasing, movies like American Sniper.
So the disconnect will continue.
Well that’s how it goes, notice I qualified with a “supposed to be”. Owing to the weirdness of the voters and their fondness for looking in the past (”well we didn’t give him best director for that awesome movie he made 10 years ago, so we’ll give it to him now for this OK movie”) the Oscars don’t wind up being what they’re supposed to be. But it certainly wouldn’t be made better by matching box office receipts.
I watched Edge of Tomorrow and Captain America: The Winter Soldier the other night, they were both pretty good you should check them out.
Can’t wait to see Guardians of the Galaxy, keep hearing great things about that movie.
I am generally burnt on superhero movies. It seems they are pretty much all the same movie, only the costumes and villians change. You are very limited where you can go plot wise. "Super villian threatens city/state/world. Superhero responds. Villian get upper hand on hero. Hero overcomes and saves the day." That's pretty much it. Guardians of the Galaxy mixed things up because it was a comedy and a very entertaining one at that with a good cast that mixed well togeather and great dialogue.
I here you on the Super Hero movies, i generally HATE them but while reading Edge of Tomorrow reviews i noticed that a lot of the reviewers were mentioning the Captain America movie so i found it on Starz on Demand, i thought it was really good, it played like a 70’s Political conspiracy movie.
Unbelievable special effects and the Captain is a true, moral American good guy....of course he is from another time, the 40’s.

I will sit through the mindlessly stupid entertainment from The Asylum of Sharknado fame 100 times before I watch a feature studio film. The last studio flick I sat all the way through was Fury. The last movie I saw in an actual theater was the first Lord of the Rings. I’ve rented “best pictures” and they are so predictible and boring I turn them off after a few minutes. Avatar? Really? That movie won awards??? Easy, by following the formula. Evil white guys in military, check. Poor defenseless endangered creatures, check. Evil corporation exploiting said creatures, check. AND for extra bonus the mineral they wanted was ONLY found in one place in the entire galaxy right under a tree. Just like the desert rat is ONLY able to live where someone wants to drill a well.
I’m looking forward to seeing Whiplash. I just don’t consider it a movie you need to see in a theater. My wife is a pianist and had some crazy instructors. The stress eventually got to her so she became an engineer instead!
