Eddie Murphy was slated to do a Bill Cosby impression during “Saturday Night Live’s” 40th-anniversary show, but turned down the gig at the last minute so as not to “kick” the embattled comedian “when he was down,” another former “SNL” member revealed Wednesday.

Murphy was expected to play Cosby during a “Celebrity Jeopardy!” skit with the category “Potent Potables” alluding to allegations Cosby spiked women’s drinks and raped them, Norm Macdonald tweeted. But Sunday, the day of the show, Murphy backed out.

“He knew the laughs would bring the house down. Eddie Murphy knows what will work on ‘SNL’ better than anyone,” Macdonald tweeted...

Sounds “noble”...except not sure how many others who were “down” thru the decades escaped SNL satire. Sounds like an exception was made.

If it were a white man being accused of rape, Eddie Murphy would have done the skit. Unwilling to call a spade a spade, because they share the same skin color. We all share the same hair follicles, the same genetics that make being light or dark skinned possible. So, all this proves, is that Eddie Murphy considers their skin color superior. A racist if that word really has any meaning in reality.

It may be more innocent than that, such as Cosby having helped him early in his career.

I've seen from other sources that SNL had hoped Tracy Morgan would be well enough to re-enter making a public TV appearance.

NY Daily News says today that SNL had (perhaps originally) slated Morgan for Celebrity Jeopardy skit role:

'Saturday Night Live' anniversary show didn't get to suit up Tracy Morgan or Bill Cosby

Eddie Murphy looks like he hasn’t aged at all.

I was very disappointed that Eddie Murphy came out to a standing ovation, then just stood there and announced the next guest. No Gumby, no Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood, no Buckwheat (other than old tape highlights.)

Not sure what he's doing career-wise these days, but looks like he could easily rebound into whatever he wanted to take on.

When you think that Lorne Michaels and all of the original crew had left by the beginning of the 80s...Chris Rock's intro of him for the 'SNL 40' episode wasn't over the top.

Murphy indeed was THE key sparkplug that resurrected a show heading for network cemetery.

Hence, Slate rated him #2 in their review of all former & present SNL cast members.

(Was the most awkward part of the show...by NOT focusing on what zoomed his career — comedy — it seemed he indeed was temporarily making it “The Eddie Murphy show” all over again...Chris Rock’s reference to Murphy being the show’s “guest host” while still being a cast member was due to SNL needing a last-minute pinch-hitter for Nick Nolte...So when the “guest host” leads into the music after the opening monologue, instead of saying “It’s Saturday Night Live,” Murphy called out, “It’s the Eddie Murphy Show”...apparently Joe Piscopo & perhaps other cast members weren’t too thrilled with that)

What’s noble about protecting a serial rapist “when he’s down”?

If Murphy’s reasoning had been that Cosby’s crimes were not a laughing matter and that the victims need to be respected, that would have been completely different.

This rationale to me is offensive.

Btw, a "little bit" of Bill Cosby commentary did make it into "Celebrity Jeopardy" within the 'SNL40' show, but it was easy to miss because it was all done so quickly.

There was a "Daily Double" video segment where the game host (Ferrell) cut away to Keenan Thompson who was playing the role of Cosby (but Cosby's name never was mentioned)...You see Thompson behind a bar with various liquors behind him...Ferrell "panics" and announces they weren't "going to go there" and that the video clip had been shot in "June" pre-scandal. The idea conveyed there was that Thompson -- as Cosby -- was going to show how he "mixes" his fave "concoction"...IoW, a date-rape drink.

Good point.

A person can still intend that their motives be "noble" -- yet, as you mention, still have their sense of "protection" misplaced.

Kind of “noble” like a Dem who thought it unseemly to mention Clinton’s sex crimes and perjury while he was president.

Ignoble, from a culture that views women, and especially white women, as lawful prey or reparations from another culture that will not, or cannot, defend itself.

So Cosby is fair game, despite unproven allegations, but Brian Williams is not, despite an admission of lies?

Seinfeld during snl40 show made Williams a target...so how is Williams thereby perceived by you as “not fair game”...btw..I am no Williams defender, but ever since the mea culpa by williams...other allegations have come forth...by the same cosby technicality you are using, those newer Williams allegations are “unproven”...so not sure your consistency here

Dozens of women from around the nation and accusing him of rape, drugging and sexual assaults over 5 decades, and ranging in age from their 20s to their 70s, and an out of court settlement for one of them, is pretty damning evidence.
