Virginia is still deciding whether to ratify the ERA.
The ERA would put in the U.S. Constitution a guarantee that Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. The proposed amendment was never added because it was not ratified by the requisite 38 states.
Virginia is one of the states that havent ratified the amendment. It may be too late to make a constitutional difference, but womens rights activists continue to push for ratification in the Old Dominion.
That is the goal of Senate Joint Resolution 216, which is being sponsored by Sen. Adam Ebbin of Alexandria and nine fellow Democrats in the current legislative session.
The resolution passed the Senate on a vote of 20-18 on Feb. 5.
The 17 Democratic senators present all voted for the measure; they were joined by three Republicans: Sens. Jill Vogel of Winchester, Walter Stosch of Henrico and John Watkins of Chesterfield. The remaining 18 Republican senators voted against the resolution. (Sens. Louise Lucas of Portsmouth and Linda Toddy Puller of Mount Vernon, both Democrats, were absent for health reasons.)
Citizens groups such as the Womens Equality Coalition applauded the Senates vote. They said the ERA isnt just symbolic its a matter of economic justice.
There would be protection against gender discrimination in the U.S. Constitution, affording strict scrutiny of appeals, said Candace Graham of Women Matter, an organization urging the General Assembly to approve the amendment.
A ratified ERA is the necessary underpinning of legislation requiring equal pay for equal work. The economic benefits to Virginian women and their families will be significant.

What is this,,,ERA debate? I just wake up in the late 70s? Who is the president?
Virginia decided that a long time ago. Stupid people acting stupidly does not change that fact.
Illegal women are more than equal.
I thought the deadline passed decades ago.
Liberals want to make women equal when women can’t do half the heavy jobs men can do well.
When they can do it, we can discuss the so-called ERA again.
It expired decades ago despite two Congressional extensions for ratification.
“Liberals want to make women equal when women cant do half the heavy jobs men can do well.”
Oh, I just LOVE comments like that!
Face it. We own half the Real Estate and ALL of the (you know what!) Who do you REALLY think is in charge here? ;)
*SNORT*
(Just funnin’ with ya. Not trying to start a gender war!)
I agree. This equality stuff is just plain stupid. We’re DIFFERENT for pretty OBVIOUS reasons. Stupid feminists.

24. Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women access to the mainstream of society.

These misguided ERA proponents never give up! Last year the Illinois Senate ratified ERA and it died sine die for the FOURTEENTH TIME in the Illinois House.
Hopefully Virginia will understood the far reaching consequences of the ERA. The ERA would override current state law giving Congress jurisdiction over areas formerly reserved as states rights.
The proposed Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states, Equality of rights shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
* The ERA will remove all legal distinctions between sexes. All federal, state and local laws, policies and regulations favoring either males or females would be unconstitutional under ERA.
* The ERA would force states to pay for abortion on demand and would stop efforts to pass parental notification or consent laws.
* If the military draft is reinstated, the ERA would force women to be drafted on an equal basis with men and would force them to serve on submarines and as ground infantry.
* Under ERA all discriminations based on sex/gender would be unconstitutional.
* High school and college sports would be forced to have unisex teams.
* All male/female educational institutions would likely lose their tax-exempt status, because ERA mandates no distinction between genders.
* The ERA would remove all legal distinction between sexes. Men and women would be treated identical in value as well as in nature.
* The ERA would also integrate same-sex and bi-sexual attraction into the U.S. Constitution.
The ERA could very well affect almost every area of life including Social Security, health insurance benefits, Medicare benefits, and pro-life issues.
Ratifying ERA would mandate artificial gender neutrality and would open a Pandoras box, thus jeopardizing the true equal protection of the existing 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Bathrooms would become gender nuetral under ERA.
I personally don’t want to use a restroom full of used Tampax.
Pretty sure I won’t remember to lift the toilet seat up either.
Why is the Virginia legislature wasting its time with this? The amendment had a specific deadline for ratification, which occurred 30 years ago. Any vote on ratification at this point is meaningless. So this is nothing more than mental masturbation by the loony left.
I don't mean to imply that you were coming off like a prostitute, but there is plenty truth in that. Billions a year spent on prostitution says a lot about the state of men these days, none good.
“Who is the president?”
From looking at the Middle East, I am pretty sure it’s Jimmah Carter.
Yes, yes, but will they take out the trash?
Girl scout cookies?!
dang!
Ali Mislowsky is not concerned that no Dem Governor and legislature passed it though..
