In Japan, they plow first Man, that looks more like carving, than plowing. Awesome job, but I'd be scared to drive through there if that stuff is 56 feet high.

That first picture looks like what could have been kicking up a storm in front of that engine in the video, but I couldn’t really see what was on the front.

I was in Houston back in the ‘50s when it snowed there ... about two or three inches, one winter. That was interesting ... :-) ...

I confess ... aint gonna DO it ... Smart man.
I'm originally from Southern California, where it can get scorching hot, but Texas is a whole 'nother level of heat in the summer.
When we first moved out here, a good biker buddy of mine told me that I was gonna cook, come summer. I looked at him and said, "Man, don't try to scare me, I'm from SoCal. I know about some heat!"
He just smiled and said, "You just wait. You're gonna think you're walking on the surface of the sun."
Damn if he wasn't right. Working outdoors here (like I do) enables a man to find the true extent of his limits.

Glad you liked it. You really gotta search for the needle in a haystack on that site for the good ones, but they’re there.

I bet that was an experience, could it have been in 1960 when we actually got some real snow rather than just a trace?

I can’t remember exactly what year it was, but my family moved to Dallas during the summer of 1960, so I was still there for the winter of 1959/60.

I just looked it up and 1960 was when we recorded the record, 4.4 inches.... except for the real record in 1885, and it says that Houston got 20 inches that year, Houston was supposedly more tropical like back then, that must have been incredible.
The word tropical reminded me that our banana tree produced bananas one year in the late 50s or early 60s.

I've always liked watching "plow specials" doing their thing, but I really don't see that many of the old "buckers" or "wedge plows" in action anymore
I suppose that with the branch lines all but gone, big locomotives with pilot plows can take care of a great deal of what is encountered as long as there is some traffic. I used to hear a lot of odd stories about railroading in the winter, and not long ago I stumbled across one of them that eventually got posted on the 'net:
http://www.cnwvets.org/Ed%20Henry%20Remembers1.htm
When I was told the story a couple of years after it happened, the rail telling it to me wrapped it up with the old saw, "That's one way to wake up a conductor."
