Germany launched its first ever aerial blitz on Britain exactly 100 years ago tonight when two Zeppelins were sent on a bombing mission which killed four.
On the nights of January 19 and 20, 1915, two of the airships were heading for Humberside but were blown further down the east coast by strong gusts.
Heralding a new era of warfare, their first two targets - King's Lynn and Great Yarmouth, in Norfolk - were chosen purely by the direction of the wind.

The start of "city-busting," that ultimately led to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. No way could the Germans claim they were after military targets, since the Zeppelins couldn't overcome the wind. They were willing to drop their bombs wherever the wind blew them.

It took some courage to pilot a hydrogen filled gas bag (No, not you, Nanci Pelosi) over the U.K. during WW I.
Oh, the huge manatees.

IIRC, one RAF pilot destroyed a Zeppelin by flying above it & dropping a single Mills grenade.
The hydrogen fireball nearly got him but he survived.

Watched a British Show about WWI Zeppelins. According to the show, Germans were banned from eating sausages during the war because they needed the cow intestines to make the Zeppelins. They showed how the intestines were laid out, overlapping ends, and when they dried, they were strong and seamless. Here's an article about it:
