You folks are depressing. I live alone and I like it also. I am the ‘rich uncle’ to my brothers 4 adult children. All married first class mates and I am treated like royalty when the holidays come around. Without them I’d be nothing. It must be awful for singe women as they get older with no family. I can see everyday that it makes them weird.

Perhaps you have touched upon a salient point ... are we really alone with all the contacts we have, as in our FR family?

Everywhere you go in our culture folks are 'on the phone', as if they cannot stand to be alone with only their own company, their own mind and interests. Do people in our culture have a morbid fear of being alone thus they are always 'in contact with someone via the technology? My ex-wife used to 'take me to the bathroom' when I would phone her ... perhaps I instinctively knew when her bladder needed emptying?

How alone are most folks who have only themselves in their home? Does having one or more pet companions grey the notion of aloneness?

Some of us are now beyond the chance to find a companion to share the last years.

Perhaps not - even friendships can be helpful and sometimes develop into more loving relationships. I've know a few older folks who have found satisfying relationships to make their waning years more enjoyable. I'll say a prayer...

Thing is, it depends on who is living there; that is much a factor, the main factor really. I’ve been around a few characters and go figure, it doesn’t always work out good.

I think the downside is more men deciding not to have families. Families are a productive influence on men. I know that without mine, I’d be less motivated and probably spend most of my time at the bar.

I really wasn’t thinking of age as the most significant factor. But perhaps it is more significant than I had calculated ...
