A man was killed and his adult stepson wounded Sunday, after gunmen opened fire on the front porch of a Carrollton home with children playing only a few feet away.
Family members identified the dead man as 35-year-old Michael "Puff" Meyers, who lived at the house in the 8400 block of Hickory Street with his mother and six of his seven preteen children. New Orleans police said he was shot once in the back around 1 p.m., collapsed outside his front door, and died a short time later at Interim LSU Hospital. Grieving relatives said he was the third member of their family murdered in New Orleans since March.
Police said a 22-year-old man, identified by relatives as Meyers' stepson, was shot in the leg but managed to scramble to safety inside the house. He was hospitalized in stable condition, family members said.
Three 7-year-old boys - Meyers' twin sons and their cousin - were playing only a few feet away on a trampoline at the side of the house when the shots rang out, Meyers' sister Mickal "Minnie" Meyers said.
"My little nephew said he ducked; that's why a bullet went over his head," she said. "That's how it hit the garbage can."
She said her brother's 12-year-old daughter was the first to rush outside to her stricken father, after hearing at least seven gunshots. One of those shots pierced the walls of the house, but no one inside was injured.
"She told me, 'My dad said, 'Don't let me die,'" Minnie said. "I told her, 'It's not your fault. You didn't let him die. It was God saying it was his time.'
"She just kept saying, 'I was just playing with my dad. I was just playing with my dad.'"

These “drive by” type crimes seem to often be related to gang activities/gang retaliations. Their biggest challenge will be to try to keep the 7 preteen children from going down the same road.
I am educated guessing this is more black-on-black violence/murder. If the attackers had been white, we’d know and sharpton would be bussing in rioters to loot and destroy all nearby local businesses.
Its getting to be a cliche, but has Reverend Al been consulted on this?

Yeah, of course. Nobody has ever randomly decided to shoot up my house. They were at that house aiming for somebody, maybe not the one that got shot, but they had “beef” with someone who lived there.
Also, gangs seem to be better than police when it comes to making sure they have the right address.
I know exactly where this is, because many years ago I lived one street over and five blocks down, just across Carrollton and the streetcar tracks.

Is this what our new Surgeon General means when he calls guns a “public health issue”? Seems like a crime issue to me. The guns didn’t go out and shoot anybody.

Regardless, it is a sad tragedy.
And POOF! just like that, Puff was gone.
Such trauma for those children. They grow up in a whole different world than my children grew up in. It’s time to do a crack down on gangs with LOOOOOONG sentences. It’s time to let the thug sub-culture die with the gang members in prison for life.
We actually do have long sentences in La. That it why we have the highest incarceration rate per capita in the Country.
