- Graham Hughes, 33, used buses, taxis, trains and his own two feet to travel 160,000 miles in exactly 1,426 days - all on a shoestring of just $100 a week
- Yesterday he trudged into Juba, the capital of South Sudan, to end the epic journey that began in his hometown of Liverpool on New Year's Day 2009
- Spent four days 'in a leaky boat' to reach Cape Verde, was jailed for a week in Congo, and was 'saved from Muslim fundamentalists by a Filipino ladyboy'
- His lowest point was when his sister, Nicole, died of cancer two years ago
- He says: 'I think I wanted to show that the world is not some big, scary place, but in fact is full of people who want to help you'

RE: ladyboy?
DEFINITION: A ladyboy (or a kathoey กะเทย) is a transgendered person who is born male, but lives as a female.
Some ladyboys have had gender-reassignment surgery (hormone therapy, reconstructed female sex organs, breast implants, facial surgery). Other ladyboys have some cosmetic surgery to make themselves look female, but retain their male organs. And others simply dress as women with no medical enhancements.
Some ladyboys are sex workers, but others are in entertainment as cabaret singers and dancers. Some ladyboys simply live as ladyboys for nobody's amusement but their own. In Thai culture particularly, the society is relatively permissive enough to tolerate ladyboy behavior without fear of persecution. In many Thai cities, you can often find ladyboys hanging out in shopping malls wearing makeup and girlie clothes (We affectionately refer to them as "drag teens").

how in hell can people afford to do this? "1,426 days - all on a shoestring of just $100 a week"
1426/7 = 204 Weeks (rounded up)
204 weeks x $100/week = $20,400
Wages of $10/hour x 2080 ("Work Hours per Year") = $20,800.
Find yourself a $10/hour (net) job, spend nothing for a year then take another two years to "See the World!"
Easy!
/S?
maybe not.

I know a guy who did like 180 countries in a year on a motorcycle for his honeymoon. The wife on a bike too. They are now divorced.

That sort of trip starts out being thrilling and exciting, but soon, I imagine it looks like so much ongoing work, maintaining the bikes, luggage and paperwork. One of that couple may have wished to stop with the Gypsy Fever for just a little while and settle in one spot.

Not so hard, really.

Some Daily Mail commenters were curious as to while the traveler displayed many sights from around the world, rarely was he ever seen as included in these photographs. Makes you kinda wonder.

Funny thing: when I take photos, I am usually behind the camera. It’s kinda hard to be in the frame when you’re the one pushing the shutter button.
JMHO, YMMV...

Good point, but I would expect a few moments of vanity shots, aka what we now call selfies, taken with some of the locals. Usually you’ll find some of the younger natives may have been westernized enough to handle a camera. Who really knows. I’m happy for him that he could travel to places like North Korea and come back smiling vs as a withered down hostage.

Cool. In the picture in the article he is wearing the exact same style Aussie bush hat I bought in Sydney in 2000. I love my hat.

It would be my worst nightmare. I think I overestimated the number
Of countries it was almost 100 on the bikes. They blogged and took pictures and there were some close calls and scary situations. She spoke a few languages which helped keep them out of jail. They paid bribes.
