New details of Apple's circular 'spaceship' HQ emerge

New planning certificates reveal 120,000 square foot auditorium and 100,000 square foot fitness center Steve Jobs originally submitted the application for the Cupertino headquarters back in 2011 The campus will be a mile in circumference, feature glass walls and solar panels and cover 175 acres

Cars will be 'banished and buried' in an underground car park and tarmac will be replaced with greenery Glass walls the height of the building will slide open, and cafes and restaurants will help break up the vast scale More than 1,000 bikes will be kept on site to help staff make their way around the circular campus

Covering 175 acres with a radical round 'spaceship' design, keeping Apple's new HQ under wraps was always going to be tough task.

Newly issued planning permits have revealed details of two of its most impressive features - a giant $161m theatre and a $74m gym for staff.

While work on the building, set to open in 2016 continues apace, the details shed new light on exactly what will be inside the spaceship.

'Given how important Apple’s announcements have become in their product launches, and how large their global audience has become, it’s not surprising that Apple would invest this kind of money in an events center,' said BuildZoom, which uncovered the permits.

They reveal a 120,000 square foot auditorium and a 100,000 square foot fitness center.

'Our guess is that the new venue will create an even more magical atmosphere.

'Meanwhile, it will be easier to avoid mishaps such as the streaming fiasco that occurred at the iPhone 6 announcement'

The spaceship site is currently cordoned off to prevent photos, but several Apple fans have managed to get an aerial view of the building using a GoPro-equipped drone.

It is the latest in a series of videos.

Covering 175 acres, the company's futuristic 'Campus 2' headquarters will be a mile in circumference when it's complete in 2016.

There’s a general business rule that says when a company’s headquarters becomes a focus for the company, it’s usually just before its end

I wouldn’t mind knowing the details of its movie screen.

Here's a picture of what the insides should look like when construction is over:

Who designed this thing, Ernest Stavro Blofeld? “The corporate headquarters only a Bond villian could love”.

It’s okay for a salesman to drive a car he really can’t afford if it brings in more sales. Apple sells hip. But this building isn’t visible from where the hip customers are. This is all about ego...mine is bigger than yours. You can bet this extravagance reflects all the way down to buying the most expensive floor wax. I’d give them a couple of years and they’re a part of history like DEC.

Typical “Maserati Marxists” that pursue wealth via free market capitalism despite their propaganda.

If I ever worked at Apple, I would drive a big arse truck to work every day, preferably something with a hemi.

I think it’s cool. Capitalism needs its success symbols. I just hope it will be open to the public in some fashion.

The DEC Hudson, MA semiconductor plant was built low and partially in the ground for energy conservation. We had "quality of worklife" meetings to determine how best to arrange the office space (after all sorts of schemes we ended up with good ol' cubicles), one of the "deep thinking" conference rooms was decorated like Fenway Park and actually had a sandbox for those who really needed to concentrate. This was all in the '80s.
