It was the Soviet’s success that ended up giving NASA a blank check to go to the moon, though the media likes to give JFK all the credit.

Good point. Any president from that era would have pushed hard to get to the moon first to beat the Soviets.

One thing missing from these videos is the feeling you get as the pressure wave from the rocket passes through your body and you can feel it move and/or vibrate your internal organs around a bit.

They say riding the old Saturn rockets to orbit was like strapping into a dragster as opposed to the Cadillac ride on the shuttles.
