Why Adele was Right to Ignore Bob Geldof and Band Aid
The Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | November 18, 2014 | Bryony Gordon

Posted on 11/18/2014 2:29:16 PM PST by Cecily

I have so many problems with the latest Band Aid single that I don’t really know where to begin, but begin we must so let’s get going with the fact that two-thirds of the line-up are unrecognisable to anyone over the age of 30 – not least Bono, who in the group photo looks as if he’d rather be anywhere else than at the feet of a YouTube Vlogger (Zoella) and slightly to the left of a bloke who once lost The X Factor (Olly Murs).

Still, that’s not really a bearing on the single as such – it’s more a sign of how out-of-touch I am with popular culture, that when I looked at the picture my thoughts were 'gosh, it looks like a school photo on mufti day!’, followed by 'thank goodness for One Direction – making elderly women feel young since 2010’.

My real problem is Geldof’s insistence on shaming Adele for not appearing on the track. “Adele is doing nothing,” said Geldof at the weekend. “She’s not answering the phone… she’s not writing. She’s not recording. She doesn’t want to be bothered by anyone. She won’t pick up the phone to her manager. She’s bringing up a family, you know.”

This is as condescending as the song itself – do Africans know it’s Christmas? Given that over 500 million people living there are Christians, we must presume the answer to that is yes – and worse, it is a form of bullying that has sneeringly been dressed up as do-gooding.

unrecognisable to anyone over the age of 30

Sounds about right -- no one over the age of 30 takes this kind of stuff seriously.

I say, Good On Adele. Tired of these celebrities pretending that they care more than everybody else.

Good for Adele. She’s got more talent in her little toe than the sum of these doofuses.

Did she get married to her Baby Daddy? Sure hope so. Lots of young women look up to her. She probably doesn’t need/want my advice, but it WOULD be nice! :)

Wasn’t the majority of the money and food stolen? I had heard that but could not confirm. Plus, Mike Peters from the Alarm wasn’t part of it so I didn’t care.

Adele is a British singer with some talent and a pleasant (to me) voice.

Bob Geldolf is and has been for a longtime, the British answer to John Gruber; smug, boastful, angry in victory, and priggish but very talented in a particular area of wonkdom.

ummm, who is adele?

She's an English singer with a nice, smoky sounding voice. She's a big gal but wears it well. Pretty real, refreshing given all the artifice and auto-tune fakery in the music industry of today.

She credited Sarah Palin for launching her career and has said good things about her as well as Margaret Thatcher so she's not too big of a leftie. Her American debut was on SNL the same night Palin appeared.

If you want to hear two of her more popular songs, go to YouTube and look for Chasing Pavements and Rolling In The Deep.

there is a difference between do gooders and people who actually do good; the former want most to be recognized for “doing good” and the latter could care less who recognizes them or not

Once again, whatever money Ol’ Bob raises in his “Ebola
relief” Band aid thing will end up in the bank accounts of whichever African “strongman” gets his hands on it first.

How much money actually goes to save the common people there?

I think that group song bullsh!T is nothing more than a masturbatory monument to those singers.

Rolling in the Deep Adele is this generation's Shirley Bassey. She has a big voice and she knows how to use it. In fact, she did sing the last Bond theme song Skyfall.
