Attempt on Kim Jong-un’s life occurred in Pyongyang, two years ago, on Nov. 3, 2012
Kim Jong-un’s schedule on the day included the tour of Ryu-kyong-won, a multipurpose recreation facility, people’s outdoor skating rinks, and roller-skating rinks, which were nearing their completion. They were only a few dozen yards apart with a road going through in-between. On the morning of the day, a man spotted near Ryu-kyong-won a loaded machine gun cleverly hidden under a juniper tree lying on the ground and reported it to the state security.
It was clearly an assassination attempt on Kim. It was suspected that assassin(s) saw a chance in Kim’s tour on the three facilities. Nevertheless, Kim toured the facilities as scheduled, which took some guts.
Perpetrator(s) was never caught. However, considering that only a very few people knew his movement which is a top secret and the tightest restriction was put on guns in Pyongyang, prevailing speculation was that a powerful figure was behind it, who can even smuggle a machine gun from abroad. Soon Jang Song-thaek was fingered as a most likely culprit. The facilities toured by Kim were built by “Internal Army” of People’s Security Ministry headed by Jang. Those who greeted Kim at the facilities were also generals from the Ministry.

One would think that if Jang wanted him assassinated,
a command detonated mine could have been built into the
facility.

Most people here probably don’t remember that there was a dramatic attempt on the life of Kim Jong-Il:
His train was scheduled to pass through a rail yard and at the scheduled time of his transit the entire rail yard (and the surrounding neighborhood) was exploded with a very, very unusual volume of explosives —the crater was over 15 feet deep.
It destroyed over 10 city blocks.
