Write down the specifics of the move and get three quotes from the big guys. Take the middle quote and divide the $$ by the mileage. Weigh all your stuff and if it is cheaper to replace than move have a yard sale. Take what is left of your stuff and rent a truck; pay someone to load and unload if you don't want to do it.

“Weigh all your stuff...”

Seriously, how in the world can you do that? “Here, honey, pick up the bed and stand on the bathroom scale.”

The boxed or easy stuff. Sorry, busy day so short typing. Moving companies can give you the beds and heavy stuff very accurately.

If your destination is at all off the beaten path try to make sure the driver/crew knows EXACTLY where to go and how to get there. We recently moved only 70+ miles and the truck got lost and was over an hour late, unloading in the dark. That made for one long day!

Also, the estimator kind of screwed the crew. Based on the estimate they brought a truck a bit too small. They got it all in, with a lot of time consuming fitting, but there was absolutely no room left in that thing.

My parents really got dinged on that when they last moved. It cost them nearly $500 extra. The movers were afraid of getting their van stuck on the nearby RR tracks.

I have moved more times than I care to count.
It's a big job moving it yourself, but worth every penny you save, and in the military, every penny you make.
We had a lot of books to move on several occasions, and we'd always put the heavy stuff on bottom of the load and between the cab and the rear axel.
We rented from U-Haul once, and with all the trouble with the truck and blown tires, I'd never recommend them or use them again.

Take a bathroom scales and hold the box and step on it, then put the box of stuff down and weigh yourself again.
Subtract the difference.
Old mattresses are better sold in a yard sale, and replaced with new and better mattresses.
Sleep;ing on a mattress that accidentally got folded or creased, ain't no fun at all.

I’ve used Penske trucks several times between north and south and have NEVER had a problem.

I've used Penske many times, and they're great.
But I'll never use U-Haul again.
I've used Ryder a couple of times, but I like Penske best.

Kansas to Colorado

It is well worth it to go with a national company with guarantees and a signed contracts...

It will cost you an arm and leg, but your personal items are insured and handled right...

Unless you are willing to pay out the nose...do it yourself...

I moved cross country using POD. Excellent service, competitive pricing and nothing was broken (I own a lot of fragiles).
