ROCKFORD, Mich. (AP) - A western Michigan couple with 12 sons is expecting baby No. 13, and even though they're sticking to their tradition of not finding out in advance whether they're having a boy or girl, they said they'd be shocked if their streak is broken.
Jay and Kateri Schwandt's baby is due May 9, The Grand Rapids Press reported (http://bit.ly/1wLt00x ). Even though they expect it will be another boy, the couple said they would welcome either into the family.
"If we were to have a girl, I think we would go into shock," Kateri Schwandt said. "It would probably be disbelief."
If he had a choice, Jay Schwandt said he would love to have a girl, but they're just "hoping for a healthy baby." Still, he would like to see the effect of adding a girl to the mix in a household with 12 boys.

I always encourage a mom when she is wondering if she should have another baby.
The gal who lives next door didn't know if she wanted a baby I said, "Just do it."
Three years later she wondered whether she should have another one and I gave her the same advice.
Now she has two of the cutest little red heads I have ever seen.
I’m thinking about a girl with 12 older brothers ... and hoping they have another boy. My youngest has 4 brothers immediately preceding.
Guess it’s like flipping a coin....doesn’t matter how many times it comes up heads, next time could be either heads or tails.
Not really. The more children of one sex a couple has in sequence, the more likely the next child is to be the same sex. There’s some causation going on, not simple an independent 50-50 chance each time.
My Mother was one of 13 children. They were a prominent and pretty well to do family. They lived on a thousand acre farm and the kids were really useful.
Surprising how close they were with so many siblings.

Even if the baby is a girl, she’ll probably be wearing boys clothes most of the time.
I always appreciate families who are happy with whichever gender God blesses them with. Usually, parents are truly thankful for each of their children, yet others can make cruel comments regarding the lack of one gender or the other.
However, I understand the desire for the experience of raising both genders, and hope this family gets to experience that.

having a son in Asia is a big deal, but I don’t think it really matters one way or another here.

wow. They would need 12 bathrooms, at least.
Ha... that happened in one of my uncle and aunt’s family. They had 12 consecutive boys before they finally had a girl.....and then they had one last boy. Amongst those twelve boys were two sets of twins. I used to love going over to their place to visit as it was no problem to have enough players to get a good softball game going.
