A father of eight has sparked controversy by refusing to save money for his children’s college education.
Guerilla Parenting author David T. Fagan told the Washington Post that college is 'a lot of wasted time' and if his children want to attend, they will have to pay for it themselves.
The 37-year-old marketing entrepreneur, whose family lives in Orange County, California, added to MailOnline: 'The focus is too much on a piece of paper and not enough on self-reliance.'

I actually support this to be honest.
It’s a parent’s choice. Who wants to put down money if your children plan to get a degree in something stupid....like a womyn’s studies degree.
I dont like to hear people brag about how they will not help their kids. I am not suggesting they pay for all of college, but I dont think it is unreasonable to help your kids when they have legit opportunities.
And saying you wont save for college for your kids makes it sound like the guy is spending the “extra” money on jet skis. I would imagine with eight kids there is not a lot of extra money.
My parents saved nothing for me or any of us to go to college on and I, frankly, don’t forgive them for that, not that they have asked. They were childish and immature. I on the other hand have saved so my kids can go.

Can just imagine all those extravagantly overpaid professors at Ivy League and big name colleges just cussing him out.
How is this a “controversy”?
I hope the kids have made dad known that they will not support him if he is infirm or destitute in his old age. And don’t knock on the door with suitcase in hand.

As a single father I put my 4 kids thru private school. Three of them wanted to go to college, one didn’t. I paid for the college. I won’t pay or support them to do nothing in life. No welfare from daddy. College betters them. No social degrees here.

I’m of two minds on this. I insisted my kids study something reasonably useful before I’d agree to pay. It worked, for the most part.
But it was way too expensive, but that’s not their fault.

The support of family members works both ways. I guess that’s real idiocy for you. Has nothing to do with the cost of college.

Where is it written that parents MUST pay for college? The VAST MAJORITY of parents cannot and have not paid for their children to go to those liberal institutions of brainwashing.
In the culture I was raised in (in the USA), no parents ever pay for college for their kids and all parents are well taken care of in their old age. Nursing homes only used for extreme cases of dementia, etc.

I didn't go to college. I saved my parents and/or myself about $100,000 (or more) and today I'm in the top 5% of earners and that includes people who went to college.
I'm not knocking college. I'm especially not knocking an education. Though I didn't go to college, I've been reading my entire life and I'm not talking Stephen King novels either. I'm currently halfway through Shelby Foote's "The Civil War" right now - a 2,800 page 3-volume set. I read about a hundred non fiction books a year.
It is a myth that you need to go to college to achieve an upper middle-class lifestyle or better. Now if you are going to be a doctor, lawyer or engineer, okay, college is sort of a necessity. However, for the rest of us, start at any entry level job and work your way up. Companies are starved for talent and excelling at an entry-level job will get you noticed and put on a fast track for management. If not, you are working for the wrong company.
