(CNSNews.com) -- Some high schools in Oregon are creating an optional “13th grade” in order to provide students with another year of academic support while boosting the state's on-time graduation rate.

Starting with the Class of 2014, hundreds of students who have completed four years of high school but have not received their diplomas will be considered “graduates" for statistical purposes.

At 69 percent statewide, Oregon had the second-lowest graduation rate in the nation for the Class of 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

The students will receive their high school diplomas upon completion of one year in the program and then be able to enter college as sophomores.

Why not just award them a BS degree in transgender studies?

But Nesbitt also acknowledged that the program rests on an “unsustainable funding mechanism." He admitted that “community colleges get state funding based on enrollment, so the state is paying twice for these students,”

We used to joke about the 13th grade, so relieved that by law, high school had to release you from attendance obligations after the 12th grade. Some people are ready for the world when they are only 15 or 16. I needed another year, being 17 when I graduated.

enter college as sophomores.

Isn't that up to the colleges considering admitting these substandard students?

“Students who meet the mandatory academic requirements for graduation but were not awarded a diploma will be classified as “4F” if they “are continuing their enrollment”

From wiki: 4-F (US military), a military classification under the United States’ Selective Service System for candidates found to be unfit for military service after formal examination by the Entrance Processing Command

Strange category to use although I think they are probably already stigmatized as probably not fit of military service.

“Educators” are such morons in many instances. They pander to the deficient and losers so they can make their numbers look good. Can you spell “educators again fail”? They never have any problem at spending our property taxes. Maybe “working” only 8 1/2 months a year is too difficult for them.
