Major League Baseball announced the 14 umpiring assignments for the League Championship Series round Thursday, and many of the boys in blue selected didn't have the best of seasons calling balls and strikes.

According to rankings published by Bloomberg Businessweek, the crew chief for the ALCS, Joe West, was the second-least accurate umpire behind home plate during the 2014 season. By percentage of correct calls, West was 83rd out of 84 umpires who made at least 1,000 total calls. West was right 83.91 percent of the time. The best umpire who made at least 1,000 calls was Paul Schreiber at 88.46 percent.

83 vs. 86 percent? Give me a break. Not enough difference to matter.

Oops, 84 vs 88. Still not enough to get worked up over.

With the KC Royals in the mix you can bet that they will be pulling Derendiger out of retirement to work their games.

Dodgers at St. Louis. Worst calls I ever saw.

one gets it wrong once every six throws. the other gets it wrong once every eight.

comsider that across an entire game. then across an entire season.

it is a big difference.

That’s an interesting stat comparison .... It means that on the average, for any batter taking it to a full count, the odds are one of the pitches was called wrong.

So who’s doing the judging and how close to the plate are THEY standing?

Also, each ump has their own strike zone. Players don’t generally get mad as long as they are consistent.

So for example for a player it is preferable for an ump can consistently call a low strike which would lower his percentage number vs a ump with a better number but moves his strike zone around.

If you have any interest in how different umpires called pitches in the playoffs this year, The Postseason Strike Zone has an interactive visual of pitches and calls.

Umpires weren't charitable to pitchers when it came to the low end of the strike zone, Jerry Meals and Paul Schrieber in particular. Victor Carapazza didn't give high and tight.

mbl like the nba and the nfl are privately owned...they can make whatever rules they want and they can direct their umps to call games certain ways....it is not illegal....

but it makes all the outcomes very questionable.....

the big leagues have certain things and certain teams and certain players they want to promote and they'll do it........

If that were the case then it would be Dodger- Angels not Royals - Orioles for the ALCS.

Each umpire does have his own strike zone. That's been the case as long as I can remember and I assume it was true when Hoss Radbourn was pitching.

Just for reference, Baseball Savant maintains a database of all MLB pitches thrown. You can search by type of pitch, count, player, runners on base, home or road games, outs, and various other persnickety factors or combinations thereof.

I don't know; but, as I was watching baseball during this past season, I was struck by the lousy calls and the frequency of lousy calls. They would call a strike, and then the little meter next to the box score would show where the ball was in the strike zone, and, invariably, it was no where near the strike zone.

I was seeing this so much more often this season, that I had to wonder if the older guys are retiring and the younger guys just haven't developed as precise an "eye" for the strike zone yet.

I remember an interview with pitcher Jamie Moyer, where he stated that he didn't care where an umpire's strke zone was, as long as it was consistent. I saw a lot of inconsistency in the strike zone this year.

The Dodgers are not an American League team so they could not be in the ALCS.
