Fierce fighting has been reported on the outskirts of Baghdad where ISIS militants are attempting to seize control of the Iraqi capital - despite ongoing Western airstrikes against the terror group.
The fighting is taking place just one mile to the west of the city, with government forces desperately trying to hold off the militants, who allegedly killed up to 1,000 soldiers during clashes yesterday.
ISIS have held a number of towns and villages close to the Iraqi capital since earlier in the year, when government troops melted away following a lightning advance in the west of the country - enabling the terrorist group to seize further swaths of territory for their so-called caliphate.

It will be interesting to see what the Shiite militias can do against ISIS. they are probably watching and waiting for the Iraq Army to fail before jumping into the fray.
When two irregular armies fight, things will get really vicious.
If true then ISIS is overextended and very vulnerable to a well planned counterattack. With American air support, the Iraqis just might be able to do it with the Shi’ite volunteers and Iranian support. Despite what Iran says, the fall of Baghdad or the establishment of an ISIS state would be a strategic disaster for Iran. They will do what they can to defeat ISIS and will not complain if the US provides air support.
If ISIS is able to overrun Baghdad, the American troops must be evacuated and not be allowed to fall in ISIS’ hands.
It will be too late to put boots on the ground and it is time to haul ass.

Absolutely. Any beheadings of American troops will require the complete eradication of ISIS. If Obama didn’t take appropriate action, his own sorry ass might be removed from office.

The advance by ISIS toward Baghdad shows that the group isn’t weakening despite U.S.-led airstrikes in Iraq. ISIS executed 300 Iraqi soldiers last week during their march toward the Iraqi capital and attempted to break into a prison in northern Baghdad.

Info I’m getting is the bombings are causing other terroist groups to unite together....doesn’t matter if they’re Shia or Sunni...too many are joining up with ISIS. Which in turn keeps there number of fighters up, and the push, despite the bombings.

Iraqi government forces nominally numbered 60,000 in the army, federal police and local police, but only one third were actually on duty. Irans going to take Iraq I think....this seems an awful lot like the push by both Sunni and Shia to see which ones going to win the leadership of the Caliphat. Iraq matters to both for obvious reasons.
I alsi think this is why we are only doing air strikes...Since the Iraq people aren’t defending their city and the army, as well as the government is completely unstable...I do not see how this can go any way but into the Hands of Iran.

Baghdadi knows he has more to fear from the Iranian trained militiamen than he does from the Iraqi armed forces. His strategy is to inflame sectarian tensions within Baghdad using car bombs on Shiite neighborhoods and militia outposts and provoke the Shiites into massacring the Sunnis in the capital. Once this happens, ISIS will bust in all guns blazing and will gain a tide of popular Sunni support along the way.

I’m not entirely sure this is so bad for Tehran. ISIS is not going to turn around and attack Iran once they’ve taken Iraq. They’ve made clear their targets are the domino line of Sunni monarchies, who are Iran’s arch enemies.
If I was Iran, would I rather face the US backed cabal of oil sheiks or a disorganized band of fanatics with no running water and no international recognition.
The crazy thing is, though nobody is saying they support ISIS, each country has potential gains in their success. Thats why its very hard to figure out who to trust.
