The consequences of anti-vaccine activism
The Volokh Conspiracy ^ | September 25, 2014 | Jonathan H. Adler

Despite a lack of any credible scientific support, the anti-vaccination movement continues apace. Boosted by celebrity “experts” Jenny McCarthy, RFK Jr., and Dr. Oz, the campaign to discredit vaccination has encouraged many parents to refrain from vaccinating their children, and now we are beginning to see the results.

Dr. Paul Offit writes in the Wall Street Journal:

Almost 8,000 cases of pertussis, better known as whooping cough, have been reported to California’s Public Health Department so far this year. More than 250 patients have been hospitalized, nearly all of them infants and young children, and 58 have required intensive care. Why is this preventable respiratory infection making a comeback? In no small part thanks to low vaccination rates . . .

Who is choosing not to vaccinate? The answer is surprising. The area with the most cases of whooping cough in California is Los Angeles County, and no group within that county has lower immunization rates than residents living between Malibu and Marina Del Ray, home to some of the wealthiest and most exclusive suburbs in the country. At the Kabbalah Children’s Academy in Beverly Hills, 57% of children are unvaccinated. At the Waldorf Early Childhood Center in Santa Monica, it’s 68%, according to the Hollywood Reporter’s analysis of public-health data.

These are the kind of immunization rates that can be found in Chad or South Sudan. . . .

Mass vaccinations and sewage control have probably contributed more to the increased life span of people in America than any other factors.

The only thing that saves the anti-vaccination idiots are the responsible adults who have their children vaccinated which provides a certain degree of “herd immunity”.

These people “feel” that vaccinations are dangerous. Those who THINK know better.

I got every shot on earth growing up (did suffer the mumps and measles before inoculation was commonly available). As a military brat (50’s) going overseas (Germany), I was vaccinated for everything. At 68, I have (except for the flue once) never beet sick.

” The area with the most cases of whooping cough in California is Los Angeles County “

HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE IMMIGRATION POLICY.....

Some diseases like polio - are deadly. Vaccination has saved millions of lives.

If an effective vaccine came out against ebola, I’d take it. We may not be able to do anything about the virulence of Nature.

But we can and should safeguard ourselves against its threats.

Liberal psychosis but there are also ostensible conservatives who buy in to it.

Mr. Adler is sounding pretty shrill there.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the August 27, 2014 Press Release, “Statement of William W. Thompson, Ph.D., Regarding the 2004 Article Examining the Possibility of a Relationship Between MMR Vaccine and Autism” that addresses fraud at the CDC.

I have no issues with vaccines, the problem I have is the “Accelerates” that they put in them in order to take one dose equivalent of weakened/dead virus and “stretch it out” over several doses. These Accelerates can and have been documented to cause auto-immune responses in some individuals.

I also have issues when they bundle a bunch of vaccines together in one shot which can cause autoimmune responses as well because it is overloading the immune system response.

The people who are pure anti-vaccines are complete nutters in my opinion.

No such link has been proven or demonstrated to exist.

But that doesn’t keep cranks from denouncing vaccination. These people are a serious threat to scientific literacy and public health.

Their ignorance costs lives and frustrates the job of preventing the spread of communicable diseases.

when watching pharmaceutical ceo’s on cnbc, there is no way in the world they are putting your safety ahead of profits.
that’s what you have to keep in mind when getting a shot.
and even more so for children who have immature immune systems.

ps. if they are so knowledgeable, why are we the sickest country on the planet?

From the Morgan Verkamp link:

My name is William Thompson. I am a Senior Scientist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where I have worked since 1998.

I regret that my coauthors and I omitted statistically significant information in our 2004 article published in the journal Pediatrics. The omitted data suggested that African American males who received the MMR vaccine before age 36 months were at increased risk for autism. Decisions were made regarding which findings to report after the data were collected, and I believe that the final study protocol was not followed...

The actions Dr. Thompson is reporting is a manipulation of data by the CDC that could explain why no such link has been proven or demonstrated to exist.

Such manipulation, which brings to mind the hockey stick horror created by global warming activist scientists in an attempt to sell the carbon tax, is itself a serious threat to scientific literacy and public health.

Because being sick in America means that lots of corporations make lots of money off of you. That’s why America has the most sickness.

FTA: Boosted by celebrity “experts” Jenny McCarthy, RFK Jr., and Dr. Oz, ...

Interesting. The same "expert," RFK Jr, who wants to prosecute globull warming "deniers" for treason is on equally scientifically solid (not!) ground here.

Every time some "liberal" POS opens its mouth, it confirms my tagline...

Don’t muddy the discussion with facts. Many people like the plantation.

Many people like the plantation.

True enough and I hope they can handle this possibility.

GraceG mentioned accelerates and that should be a concern for everyone, considering the advancement of nano-technology and its application in the vaccine industry.
