Im assuming the phrase staging came out of the theatre world, but its equally at home (and useful) in the movie world, since the term (roughly defined) refers to how all the various elements of a given scene or piece are aligned, arranged, and coordinated. In movies the role of editing adds something unique: the opportunity to extend and/or expand a visual (or narrative) idea to the limits of ones imaginationa crazy idea that works today is tomorrows normal...
So I want you to watch this movie and think only about staging, how the shots are built and laid out, what the rules of movement are, what the cutting patterns are...

Very interesting. Thanks for posting this.
Interesting.
This confirms what I’ve speculated about George Lucas. He’s a mediocre screenwriter, and an okay director. But he’s a damn good editor and a hell of a cinematographer. Even if the story is weak in Lucas’ movies the visuals and pacing are usually stunning. JMO

Lucas had nothing to do with the visuals of Raiders. It was directed by Spielberg and photographed by Douglas Slocombe (who is still alive at 101).
I was thinking more about the “Star Wars” franchise.

Well he only directed the first film (or the original trilogy). He is a good editor though. American Graffiti shows this best.
‘of the original triloy’
Bookmarked.
No doubt one of spielbergs best. However I would like to say how much the score plays a part. This would work as a silent movie. He also does his own storyboards, crude sketches but it works.
Douglas Slocombe turns 103 today. He was the D.P. on Raiders and its first two sequels.
:)
