I searched the database and found 2,129 sports teams that reference Braves, Chiefs, Indians, Orangemen, Raiders, Redmen, Reds, Redskins, Savages, Squaws, Tribe and Warriors, as well as tribe names such as Apaches, Arapahoe, Aztecs, Cherokees, Chickasaws, Chinooks, Chippewas, Choctaws, Comanches, Eskimos, Mohawks, Mohicans, Seminoles, Sioux and Utes. (Not all teams with the names Raiders and Warriors are referencing Native Americans, but we spot-checked 20 schools with each name and a majority of each did.)
Some 92 percent of those 2,129 team names belong to high schools (the rest were college, semi-pro, pro and amateur league teams). Of all the active high schools in the database, 8.2 percent have Native American team names.

To be fair “warriors” can be attributed to any warrior.
“Tribes” can be attributed to any tribe.
And “savages” can be attributed to muslims.
The next team name to be targeted will be “Crusaders.”
A friend of mine attended High School in Pekin, Ill where the mascot was the Chinks.
I believe Orangemen is a reference to the Protestant followers of William of Orange.
“Raiders” could just as easily evoke images of Vikings, known for carrying out raids.
There were “warriors” and “raiders” on this planet long before the Indians become Native Americans.
Give the PC crowd time. They tend to take on one issue at a time. After a few wins to change mascots, holders of mascots will voluntarily change them.
Nearly a decade ago, the state U where I did grad work changed their ‘Redmen’ mascot/name to ‘Rowdy the RiverHawks’.
PC — winning one battle at a time.
Can I ask why this article repeatedly uses the term Native Americans rather than American Indians?
Are we not supposed to say American Indians anymore?
I am a native American by the fact that I was born here. I am not a descendent of an Indian tribe however. I think the term native American only serves to confuse the issues.
Why is there pressure only on the Washington Redskins, but not on the Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Braves, etc.???
People get mad when I say I’m a native American. I tell them I was born an American so that makes me a native. My ancestors came over in 1846 (father’s side) and 1740 (mother’s side). I think that’s enough time to be considered native.
Why do American Indians feel that they need special consideration? Are they not just as capable as others when it comes to being successful in life?
And the “Reds” honor the ferocity of Lenin and Trotsky...
Orangemen? I thought that referenced the age-old Protestant foes of the Irish. As in William of Orange.
Personally (as a member of a family whose ancestors were slaughtered by a band of brigands in the Border Wars between Kansas and Missouri) I am offended by the name “Jayhawks”.
Yeah exactly. I think the author mistook “Orangemen” for a variant of “Red men” or something.
Lets not forget the BALD KNOBBERS of Southern Missouri.

Yep. Marquette University dumped “Warriors”, even though the term is not specific to Native Americans.
Eastern Michigan was forced to dump “Hurons” but Central Michigan is still the “Chippewas”. Go figure!
Now some team names are supposed to be derogatory. What happened since that time of measurable sanity? (rhetorical)
